  1. If the push rods were O.K. that probably rules out cam follower. One step forward.
  2. Just take the three dome nuts off the rocker cover, give it a bump with your hand or a soft mallet lift it off and you will be able to see a bent push rod, or if all the rockers are working as they should when you rotate the crankshaft, the problem is elswhere.
  3. Cam followers do give trouble breaking with varying degrees of damage to the block, also the hot spots in the head come out and do damage. Four turns before locking up is food for thought.
  4. I know you want to keep it authentic, but a motor replacement may be the easiest quickest cheapest option. Then you can investigate the original engine at your leasure. Until you get the can of worms open you do not know what the repair is going to cost. Just a point there is a take out on ebay at the minute that is under £100.
  5. It is prudent to eire on the side of caution.
  6. Another part to make an offer on. 24v Land Rover starter motor. Bosch 001219012. ERR5021. I have only bench tested appears to work fine. Now sending for overhaul
  7. There seems to be a history with this type of engine breaking piston skirts,. have you drained the oil and looked for debris?
  8. Is your engine a 11j or 12j? if it is a 12j then all the major parts are the same as civillion ones so readily available.
  9. Some people naturally play by the rules and others do not know what rules are. Every day is precious, free speech is not dead and nature rules. I have no isues with the DVLA, they I think they treated me fairly and did try to give me the benefit of the doubt. All one can do is live by the rules one sets oneself, you know right from wrong, It is instinct. Makes you mad sometimes but thats life. At least we got up this morning.
  10. All the bits are liftable and not really heavy, the sun will come out at some stage. If it was a conrod there would probably be a hole in the block. If it is a big end problem it more than likely would not turn, so if you are not in a hurry to repair it be curious.
  11. There has got to be a way around the problem without spending loads of money. How far have you got with disassembly? Is the head off or just the rocker cover.
  12. I wonder if the back was a living room if that would make a difference.
  13. I wonder what the Thornycroft engineers would think about the new equipment and techniques being discussed on this thread. Achivable tollerances are amazing. Metal technology, Machine tools and Welding equipment have moved forward a long way since their day. But riveting is still the same.
  14. That is very interesting I wonder who they were.
  15. Sorry, mine is a blackspur model JS206 12V 6W.
  16. I just purchased a small one off ebay, new £4. It has been no problem and charged all sizes of batteries. It is only the size of a phone charger.
  17. When you are driving the wheel you cannot get off. Its tough.
  18. A long way from the sea.
  19. I see your location is Spalding, I used to squeeze into H Leverton there with a low loader years ago. Also overnighted at Fowler Welch a few times.
  20. I would imagine it was a repeat but the C4 program last night was interesting. In a shed on the south coast a Valentine DD tank under a sheet.
  21. It is like looking for the last item to finish a job. "How on earth did that get over there"! Or words to that effect.
  22. You must get a definative view from the DVLA Medical branch, there is to much at stake to guess. I have been through it for Heart attacks. They are very helpfull but a phone call is a must. Get their answer in it in writing.
  23. Have a look around and see what is available in the replacement lump department. A straight swap may work out cheaper, and you can do it yourself with a bit of help from friends.
