  1. Precisely, I started the day mending the roof, then it got a damp so I started shooting rats & now its raining more started looking through some old manuals, so we are. :-D
  2. Adrian the sign of a seasoned contestant :-D
  3. Well someone has fallen for it
  4. Nope these are not edible although maybe Army pasta isn't either:-D What a strange suggestion!
  5. There's an AM one on ebay! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RAF-WW2-BATTLE-OF-BRITAIN-1940-Briefing-Room-Chair-Folding-ORIGINAL-1940-/380698349635?pt=UK_Collectables_Militaria_LE&hash=item58a363d043
  6. Jack definitely not a REME modification! I don't understand why people might pay a significant sum for a 24v to 12v converter unit for the ignition circuit. Although it is a better idea than tapping off 12v from one battery! If you use a 24v to 12v converter you are losing out on efficiency, because the inclusion of a ballast resistor is not some dodge just to get a lower voltage because Lucas couldn't design a 24v coil. It is there to change the time constant of the circuit by loading the inductance of the coil with resistance. So that for a given dwell angle in the 24v circuit with ballast resistor, the coil can absorb a higher magnetic charge than a 12v system. At high revs this is significant. It is best to retain the ballast resistor in the filter unit to get the benefit of this time constant improvement. It also avoids introducing an electronic converter into the system that may prove to be less robust for life in a Land Rover rather than a large resistor wound on a chunk of asbestos that was rugged & reliable enough for the Army
  7. Jack I'll just restrict myself to just commenting on the 24v system for charging & ignition. My advice is to avoid a vehicle that has had the electrical system modified. There is a high chance that it will be bodged either in a naive or dangerous fashion or at best done well to a requirement that only the previous owner can understand. Be particularly wary of vehicles still nominally 24v but have a 12v ignition system running from it. Fault finding in the original set up is one thing but once non-original wiring goes in there it is a nightmare to diagnose. Particularly bearing in mind that modifications may have been an attempt overcome or side step an untreated problem. With your RF background unauthorised wiring may not be too much of a challenge, but remember when you come to sell it then this alternative wiring devalues the vehicle in the eyes of a buyer for the above reasons. 73 de G4MBS
  8. A friend has purchased a crate of documents that includes the full servicing history for a number of Rovers. It would be nice to unite the original documentation to the vehicles again. If you own one of them listed below & have proof of ownership, please PM me so I can put you in touch with the man with the documents. 12KF19 35KL71 53KG96 56KK85 66KJ88 83KE82 CF87AA 18KF94 35KL77 54KG48 57KK74 69KF26 92KE29 LM14AA 18KK09 37KL14 55KG25 58KJ43 71KF77 97KE47 LM29AA 19KK20 39KL31 56KG14 62KF55 73KF81 97KE47 LP24AA 35KL56 39KL32 56KK61 66KF48 73KJ43 CB32AA LR78AA
  9. Paul I have several of the same volumes of POWER P but none of them have this particular section. So these would have all come from workshops that didn't have to deal with this DLB unfortunately. PM coming up.
  10. Paul I expect you have been looking in EMER TRACKED VEHICLES but Vehicle Electrical Systems, FV Pattern are covered in EMER POWER P. DLB No.1 Mk 1 is in EMER POWER P 160/3 - 169/3
  11. Joe if the engine has been running for a few minutes then the generator will have got lubricated as much as its going to. So no point in priming it. You will always have the change in generator sound around 1,000 rpm.
  12. Joe yes assuming you have a 2-speed 25A generator. It is the generator gearbox operating. If it has been idle for 3 weeks you need to prime its gearbox with 1/4 pint of engine oil. As it only gets lubricated after a few minutes of running. This is under the brass filler nut on top of the generator near the pulley. Do not put oil down the mesh hole that is the air intake.
  13. Well done. So what was the prize for, the BRDM or the Scorpion?

  15. Mark I don't know what problems you have been through but you were always a cheery face when I have seen you. Welcome back anyway.
  16. I always decant what I haven't used into jam jars right to the brim so I have ready to use small quantities of the same mix. For convenience it usually means a few large mayonaise jars, then smaller jars & some very small jars. So I can choose the right quantity for the job without wastage.
  17. I don't know if they got re-classified but I found what I thought was them in Regulations of Equipment of the Army 1942 in Section KA (Misc office Eqpt etc) as Chairs, folding, flat. However there is no doubting them from the picture in a 1946 VAOS J1 (Camping eqpt) Chairs, G.S. Although there were fewer slats on the 1946 one. Richard how many slats do yours have?
  18. Yes a Queen's crown & I don't suppose it is Victorian although I can remember these at school! From new they had varnish, my recollection is that it gave quite an orangey finish.
  19. Roy welcome back. That is indeed a comprehensive & well structure post but I'm afraid I can only respond to few points. The "3/4 Ton GS Land Rover Protection Kit FV984568" was formalised in Nov 1980 to convert vehicles fitted with VPK. As you know these VPK vehicles are often incorrectly called Makrolon vehicles misunderstanding that the body protection is from mouldings of GRP. Later modifications in July 1981 make mention that the conversion from VPK vehicle with "High Velocity Protection Kit" took 70.1 hours & also mentions a time of 75.5 hours for a new vehicle. There were further amendments that went on into March 1982, but nowhere is there any reference in the parts lists or the fitting of thing on the front bumper. I have seen one official drawing that makes reference to "Piglet" unfortunately as you know many will also refer to a VPK vehicle as such. Mesh screen guard, roof gutters & fan assembly were all part of the original conversion.
  20. Sorry I'm reluctant to do that as I think it was private correspondence. On a completely unrelated matter I recently had a letter published that I had assumed was private correspondence, so I don't wish do a similar thing. I don't mean that to sound stuffy but I'm sure if you wrote to Rex he would be able answer your concerns.
