Carbines were for officers, noncoms and troops who didn't have the facility to carry a rifle, most front line troops had the Garand so I think its reasonable to assume that service troops would have the '03 Springfield which had mostly been relegated from front line service.

The BBC has been trailing a programme about an American Archive of life stories. One of the trails was a piece about the tuscoly ( I think that's it) Flyers? The black squadron, meant to prove the 'Black men did not have the technical skills to fly aircraft'. Their unique boast is that they are the only group never to have lost a bomber they were escorting to enemy fighters'. Will try to find the story.

There is plenty of info on Wikipedia. To summarise first posted to N.Africa then Sicily before Italy. Initially there was just one fighter squadron, the 33rd but later joined in Italy by 3 more squadrons to become the all black 332nd fighter group.
