Not a book I would normally have got, it was left on a bus, and I read it out of intrest. Glad I did! While not Military History, it is a well written well researched an eminently readable book. The subject is huge, the British Empire from its inception to the remnants of the modern day. Of especial intrest to anyone here will be the sections covering the effects of the two world wars. All the authors arguments are detailed and rational covering both the good and bad effects of the Empire that at its height governed 1/4 of the world. His conclusions give a lot of food for thought. Unlike many modern histories the author does not ram his point of view down your throat, he gives you an entertaining read, a lot of fact and the conclusion he reached, but you are free to disagree.
