motorka CSIAB
Hi - I will renovate the electrical distribution on my Triumph HW - I don't know, but I will assign a negative (-) pole to the original on the frame. Can you advise or have a photo? Michael
79x100
This chap explains it all very clearly. Negative earth is normal for motorcycles of this period. https://www.matchlessclueless.com/electrical/lucas/repolarising-lucas-dynamo/
motorka CSIAB
I guess I wrote it wrong. I wonder where he was "from the factory" is the wire attached to the frame.
Ron
I think the normal place is at the stud and nuts that join the rear frame to the front frame under the saddle. I can't find a clear Triumph picture yet. But these Norton and Matchless pictures clearly show it. Ron
Ron
Michal I'm waiting for conformation later. But I think the earth point for a 3HW was the brass terminal on the magneto. See here on a BSA. Ron
welbike
Yes, didn't you do my Enfield like that too?? Could well be the solution! Lex
rewdco
Indeed, as used on Royal Enfields. Jan
79x100
On the 16H, the mag body earthing screw is top right. The same system though. Lucas didn't waste ring terminals if balling the strands up behind a grub screw would suffice !
motorka CSIAB
here it looks like caught on a magnet tape ...
motorka CSIAB
and here on 3 SW it's different again ...
welbike
2 wires going to that post, so must be right! Cheers, Alex

79x100
The 'CC' prefix means that it's in Canadian service so is likely to have been modified, even if just for the hell of it !
Ron
OK it's official! This picture is from a 3HW riders handbook and the other pictures are other period models. Two wires to the mag earth grub screw point. One from the battery and one from the regulator. Ron Edited April 26, 2022 by Ron
79x100
That's what I came up with, Ron. It's often puzzled me looking at other WD bikes that the owners rarely have anything on that terminal.
motorka CSIAB
So I confirm - there is a connector copper nut
Ron
It's usually a brass hexagonal post with a slot down one of the flats to push the wires in with a grub screw. (like on the light switch). But you could put a loop connector under that nut on yours. Ron
motorka CSIAB
Ron, I'm sorry maybe "uncle google" translates this well. The nut is knurled for hand tightening. So it will probably be original. Even with your photos of Triumph, I dare to guess that there was a matrix file than a "stick". Maybe every motorcycle manufacturer had it differently. Or it was, according to the specific type of magdyn. Or as with pillion seats - "what the house just gave" I have the original Lucas catalogs, but the one under one number has several designs ...
