Reliable places for advertising militaria / radios / vehicles ?

Steve 82

Question

I am having a Spring cleanout and, in preparation for an upcoming project need to let some stuff go - including militaria, radio kit, vehicle, trailer and spares.

Could I please ask fellow members for their suggestions as to reliable online methods for advertising (am hearing bad things with regards Ebay. Of course I realise there is the facility here and, milweb.

Any thoughts / suggestions / experiences would be much apreciated.

Cheers,

Steve

eBay is in my opinion full of people who bid a price and then want to haggle AFTER the auction ends. I sold my Jeep trailer twice on eBay, first bloke, despite several warnings turned up with the WRONG hitch so disappeared never to be seen again. He did however offer to pay £100 LESS and return in six weeks or so, oh and "I will pay for it then, I don't believe in deposits". Madman. The second person bid and won it only to then claim that DESPITE my advert being 100% accurate he hadn't actually READ it so "it isn't what I'm looking for". :banghead: To be honest the easiest sales come via here and like minded clubs, people tend to know what they want and are genuine. eBay appears to attract penniless timewasters and bargain hunters who despite having a week to view an item five miles away turn up trying to buy it for less than their legally binding bid. I BUY on eBay but rarely sell nowadays. And yes I pay what I bid :D

I fully agree; I have done a lot of buying and selling and while happy to buy on eBay ( 'cos I trust ME!), I have only sold via the likes of Milweb and specialist mags that attract the real enthusiasts. NEVER post your email address unless you want the scammers to pounce.....and this applies to posting an ad' anywhere! Use a phone number. I have always found my stuff good homes snd met some really nice genuine folk this way. The local paper also used to be a good place to advertise, but our local rag has gone mainly web-based with classifieds and the results have been poor.

I have bought and sold on eBay since 1998. As a matter of fact, when I started selling on there, you could, and I did sell guns. I then sent them to the buyers FFL, so there was no loop-hole. I sold a WW2 sniper collection for over 44,000.00. I have also sold a Toyota 4X4 on there for 6,000.00. I was a power seller till they changed the rules to where a seller could not leave a negative, but the buyer could.

Anyway, I have only had 1 or 2 problems in all that time I have been on there. And eBay and PayPal worked both out. IF you try to go around eBay and buy or sell with out fee's your on your on. This is usually what happens when there is trouble.

Even if you hate them, you will get hundreds of people looking at you item. More than anywhere else.

When you sign up, they will ask a lot of questions about who you are. But would you want to send money to someone they knew nothing about?

You seem to imply that people who cheat eBay are the ones who have trouble ? My feedback both buying AND selling is currently @1080 and 100% positive. Paypal is NOT perfect, I was charged for both of my previously mentioned trailer (NON) sales despite being reported immediately to eBay AND paypal, it took me weeks to get my fees back AND eBay did nothing to the two non buyers whatsoever. I stick rigidly to the rules unfortunately as in most things in life the innocent appear to take second best to the wrongdoers. Yes eBay reaches worldwide it also attracts large numbers of chancers, fraudsters and "experts". How many of us have seen "mint genuine" WW2 Jeeps offered for £5000 by buyers who are unable to allow viewing but will deliver to your door once payment is made ? If you sell on eBay make sure payment is made before letting the item leave your possession do not take cheques and for larger items cash on collection is the way to go. You will still have those who arrive thinking the bidding proper then starts.

While ebay is global market place which can help you realise market price for your items you must be aware of the costs involved, it may seem a good deal but by the time you add it all up especially if a lot of money is involved I don't think its worth the hassle.

I buy odds and sods off ebay but very rarely sell due to this issue plus I've had the old item not received scam which really p*ssed me off nothing I could do lost my item and my money.

I prefer to sell on here to fellow enthusiasts and know the kits going to a good home, Millweb has seemed to die off over the last few years with not many people advertising after the mandatory fee was imposed, they even charge for wanted ads now. I understand they have to cover running costs etc but it has killed it.

Just my random thoughts on the matter RR

No, what I am saying, is if you(anybody) goes around eBay to dodge the fee's there is nothing eBay or PayPal can do to help out. They were not involved in the sale. If you go through eBay, the sale and collection of the funds is handled through eBay and PayPal. The system is set up to tell you, when you have been paid, then you ship. No matter where I sale I would never ship before being paid.

There are scammers on EVER board buying and selling. Read any forum you want and you will see people complaining about them. So the more people you have on a board, the more scammers there are. Might be the same %, but more people mean more scammers.

I was speaking in general terms. I did not say you were doing anything, or anybody on this board were doing anything, but after being on there for 18 years I have had a bunch of people wanting be to cancel sales and sale to them, over and over. Will not do it and never have.....
