Jeep Gearbox

Does anyone know where I can obtain a NOS original synchromesh from, for my 42 Willys Jeep. Ron

I think all the NOS original Jeep gearbox syncros are long gone or stashed away in private spares collections, only repro syncro units are available

I have a friend who bought new synchros from Jeeparts, the GPW has been over to Normandy and Arnhem from the Wirral last year, as well as numerous other jaunts.

To date there have been no problems with the gears. That seems to me to be good testament.

Best regards

John

Hi I have had recently where the brass synchro ring and the cone on input shaft were not matched to each other and when bolted together would bind the input shaft so you could not turn by hand when not in gear.parts were from different suppliers, had to put in another suppliers synchro ring to stop binding.the id of the tapper on one was a few thou bigger so caused it to bind in the space it has to sit in with no gear leaver pressure.was given this box to look at the fault for a freind this is the second time I have come across this fault.non of the parts were nos as snap on say there is a difference .

Nick Jeffrey explained to me that the brass synchro ring must be a tight fit to the taper on the gears. Such that when you push the ring onto the 2nd gear taper you should be able to pick the gear up by the brass ring and shake it about without it dropping off. They soon bed in of course, but it makes logical sense to me now that I have stripped and rebuilt my gearbox. Here's hoping for some crunch free gear changes at last. Ron

Jumping in on this thread should a GPW have a synchro from second to first gear.I seem to have difficulties performing this without almost stopping

No only 2nd to 3rd is synchro blocked, 2nd to 1st is double de-clutch it's a much faster change than on the large trucks.

Another point worth considering is that you should use a Straight 90 gear oil in the box and not an Extreme Pressure (EP) grade. This is because the sychro is in effect a brake and EP will inhibit that action giving you crunchy gear changes.

Sorry if you already know this, I am good at teaching grandmothers to suck eggs!

Yes I am aware Richard but worth pointing it out for others. I bought a 5 gall drum of the stuff with a mate from 'Specialised Products' in Ferndown. The axles however take Hypoid oil. I'm also aware of not using EP oil in old gearboxes with Bronze parts.

I'm just waiting for my mate to get his arse over here to help me put the trans back.

Cheers Ron

Getting in first while driving can only be done by doubling the clutch with a touch of revs.

So basically the same as a Dodge.
