Fox CVR(W) Runflat Inserts.. HELP!!!

Marmite!!

Recommended Posts

Started changing the tyres on the Fox today.. took them to my usual commercial fitters who do anything up to an earth-mover but they couldn't get the Runflat Inserts out of the tyre.. they are unlike the inserts on the Ferret, Saladin, Saracen etc. the one's on the Fox seem to fill the whole tyre, they had never come across an insert like this before.. only option we had today to get the Fox rolling again was to put standard flaps & tubes in the new tyres, they did think of cutting the old tyre to get the insert out but couldn't work out how they would get it in to the new tyre... on the positive side the wheels are a hell of a lot lighter now, reckon that insert weighs almost as much as the tyre..

So Chris m, Richard F.. or anybody else do you know the answer :dunno: :dunno:

Next question on diameter of the tyres & keeping them within 2" of each other on the same size.. is this measured with the tyre pressures the same or doesn't it matter :dunno: the reason I ask is front & back pressures are different & surely this alters the size somewhat :dunno:

Final question what should the tyre pressures be front & back.. remembering one side is now on standard tubes :dunno:

Lee,

It shouldn't matter which inserts you have fitted, they're really only there to stop the tube from pinching in the rim halves when reassbling and to stop the tube from rubbing on the rim when in use. I check my diameters with the wheels off and on the floor, because I put the vehicle up on jacks and get the wheels off to service it.

To get those inserts out you'll need 2 long bars with flats on the end. I use a 432 track changing support rod, since these are hollow and lightweight. They work a treat.

Tyre pressures (psi) should be 45 front 50 rear for Michellin X and 18 front 36 rear for Dunlop Trakgrip.

Chris,

these guys are proffesionals use to working earth moving equipment & have never come across a insert like the one on the Fox, they had all sorts of bars in there but the insert had almost no give in it, these are 5" thick.. tube, what tube :dunno: we couldn't find a tube, the valve stem comes straight out of the insert, looked behind the insert & no sign of a tube :dunno: not sure if you have had your Fox wheels apart yet but as I said they are nothing like the normal runflat inserts..

Lee,

These are Hutchinson inserts, from distant memory they are a large square section, allowing a degree of support in the event of a puncture. I would not advise you to use any other sort of beadlock, such as the Dunlop one, as there is no support from the Michelin tyres in the walls if suddenly deflated, and a serious rollover accident could occur.

When these tyres were introduced for the Fox as a substitute for Dunlop, the wheels and tyres were taken to a firm that specialised in fitting them. At that time, probably 1980's, I think they were Andover area, but may be wrong. try contacting http://www.hutchinsonuk.com for advice.

I am sure Chris has not taken these out with tyre levers, special equipment is needed.

Hi Richard,

they certainly are a square section, the tyre firm checked the specs on the Michelins to make sure they are suitable for standard tubes & flaps but I won't be doing any high speeds on them until I've worked out a way of getting them sorted, got to be someone in the UK that can handle this :dunno:

found a firm that's got the machines to fit them.. but in the Netherlands.. http://www.tssh.com/index.htm?page=http://www.tssh.com/UK/runflat_hutchinson.htm

Chris,

I'll take some photos of the insert tomorrow, when I get a bit of time I'll cut one of the old tyres off so I can get a better look at it,

Richard,

cheers for the contact number..

This is the insert that most resembles the ones on the Fox, although they fill the tyre more than shown in the pic & is more of a square setion..

Lee,

I went through their websites as well, there was nothing shown that is quite like those in the Fox. Guess that type is outdated now and been developed further. I am sure the insert was in itself a tube, with valve attached.

At least thats one evil -and weight - that I'm spared on the Stalwart!! :-) :-)

FWIW - the book say the Stalwart has to have the tyres measured with all the wheels at 30 psi then once any change has been made the tyres are reset to the correct pressures
