lssah2025
Cromwell shipping is booked and will be arriving at Ricks place in Manchester on the 27th of March, then we should get to go through the bins and boxes on the 28th, and then I will get to visit Ricks lovely Cromwell for a spin around the airfield in Norfolk... plus a few pints while I am there.. So as Rick said in a previous post, as soon as I start throwing money his way it will get underway, so hopefully around July/August the resto will start taking place, some small things will be done first, engine to get checked etc. but hopefully full tilt within the next 4-5 months.. eddy8men
lol you want pics john, you nearly got the call to come and help us unload it bloody tractor got a puncture and we had to twist the drivers arm to uncouple his tractor unit and pull it off with a little help from the forklift under the rear track links but all's well that ends well and it is now sitting outside my yard ready for shunting inside later on today. rick

lssah2025
Met up with Rick, Friday afternoon, went out to the yard, got some pics of the beast as it sits and looked at some of the kit in the boxes that came up with it, Rick will go through it next week, and hopefully will get the turret yanked off and starting to look like a Cromwell again, hit the pub later that night and off to Shauns in Sat am in Norfolk to check out Ricks Cromwell. I will post some pics later of both, traveling today...I think I am am excited too.....:-D
eddy8men
good to meet you lance, just a shame it was only a flying visit. maybe next time it won't be such a rush. looking forward to start pulling it apart and getting the engine checked out. the first task will be to pull everything out of the tank and see what we have. after that the engine and gearbox need to be assessed for serviceability and sent off to the various specialists if required, then the turret will be pulled and hopefully sold to help fund the resto. the biggest problem so far is the condition of the rubber on the road wheels, we'll either have to get them re rubbered which is the preferred option as it will keep the tank original or failing that chieftain wheels that will need to be machined to the right width and correct stud alignment. cost will probably decide which route we take there is also the small problem of finding a turret and ring but for now i'll concentrate on what we have and worry about the rest later. rick
kevin powles
Here's another on I called in this morning just to have a look ! Rick, You didn't find it up on milk crates with the wheels missing, it's in Manchester after all !. To have a set of 20 Chieftain wheels machined and drilled cost me 3K plus £40 quid each for a NOS wheel, so that's less than £200 a wheel and you benefit from more modern rubber compounds. kevin. eddy8men
cheers kev that is definitely an option we are considering but if it's economically viable i'd like to keep the originals  rick
eddy8men
the engine has been loaded up and taken to the merlin specialist for assessment and repair, although the engine was seized solid i'm fairly hopeful it will be salvageable. we'll know for sure next week when the fella starts to take it apart. Adrian Barrell
I think its a MkIII......
lssah2025
Adrian your correct, my mistake, they had either a Mk1B or MkIII, I was thinking that if I had to buy another engine if one is needed, it would be a MkIVB take out from a Centurion and then I would have to turn it into a MKIII (engine sump and a few other parts moved over). Still learning everyday.
Adrian Barrell
Lance, that's correct. It is a fairly easy swap of parts if you need to do it, you have all the bits on your engine! I have done it twice before and did find some discrepancies in the fit of some parts but nothing major.
