Guest matt
Hi, Just wondering how many WWII era Caterpiller tractors there are in the UK?(or indeed Europe for that matter) are there many in collectors hands?. I'm specifically thinking of military used examples but as there is little or no difference between military and civilian examples I would be interested to hear of any pre 1945 machines. Same question also for International crawlers. Matt.
Jessie The Jeep
These are the only 'Cats' I know anything about.......the Consolidated version http://rcsb1.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/walk/mainpic/catalina.jpg[/img] I seem to recall seeing a 'tracked cat' in a French museum that had been used since the war in a quarry, and only retired in 1995! Degsy
Hi Matt Jim and Martin at Allied Forces have recently acquired one for restoration and I am fairly sure that one towing a box scraper appeared at War and Fleece last year. There was one (a D7 I think) on the beach at Le Hamel in 2004 which may have been British owned and also in 2004 in a field adjacent to the Bayeux museum there was a box scraper which had olive drab showing under it's later yellow, this was just crying out for restoration. whistlinwolf
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a270/whistlinwolf/JulesCat.jpg[/img] Julie got this to go to Sainsburys in, no parking problems at all!
Guest matt
Thanks Degs, obviously they are "out there" but I guess many folks don't want to tackle something like that. Do you know which model Jim and Martin have? I'd hate to think how much moving the box scraper from Bayeux would cost. I know where there is an International TD-18 in running order with it's original US markings intact,Eventually I hope to add it to the fleet 8-) Matt. Richard Farrant
Matt, My friend, Pip Biddlecombe, has a WW2 ex-US Army D7 with LeTourneau cable operated blade, along with a LeTourneau scraper (which came from Holland). It has attended, and worked in the arena, at Beltring for about 6 years running now. There is a picture attached. Also an ex-army D4 was at Beltring a couple of years back. Great War truck
There is also a fully armoured, original and unrestored British army D7 in the UK. Steve gets to travel to all these interesting earth moving shows and saw it there. I have a picture. Let me see if i can find it. Jim Clark
Just to put the record straight, my Cat is a 1943 D4. We found in a scrap yard in the Forest of Dean, it was stacked on top of two trucks! After close inspection we found the original shipping weight and a white star painted on the fuel tank. http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q151/CatD4/CatD4004.jpg[/img] Here is a photo of how we found it... If there is interest I can post a few more. Jim

Degsy
Hi Matt, yes I have got a couple of pics but unfortunately the were not taken digitally and I don't have a scanner.
Jim Clark
cant get the hang of this picture posting, but here goes.As you can see the shipping weight and a white star painted over it are visible on the fuel tank under layers of paint.http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q151/CatD4/CatD4001.jpg[/img] The following pics are of the Cats arrival at our workshop and its partial strip down. http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q151/CatD4/CatD4009.jpg[/img] http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q151/CatD4/CatD4012.jpg[/img] http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q151/CatD4/CatD4014.jpg[/img] http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q151/CatD4/CatD4018.jpg[/img] http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q151/CatD4/CatD4019.jpg[/img] http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q151/CatD4/CatD4024.jpg[/img] http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q151/CatD4/CatD4032.jpg[/img] http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q151/CatD4/CatD4034.jpg[/img] http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q151/CatD4/CatD4042.jpg[/img] Although it looks rough it is very complete and very easy to restore. If you think it looks a bit of a daunting task you should have seen my Sherman when I bought it Jim
Enigma
Compared to a Sherman most MV's should be more or less easy!!
