Scammell4199
Where do owners of warbirds in the UK send their engines for rebuild, radials, V12s and the like? Richard
Adrian Barrell
There are a few places to choose from both here and in the US.
Scammell4199
Hi Adrian, Yeah i've found a few in the US, but can't find any here. Do you have names of any here? just out of interest really. Thought their websites might prove interesting viewing. Richard
XM496
This company is one of the leading UK specialists: http://www.retrotrackandair.com/. They are based near Dursley in Gloucestershire, but also have a workshop at Cotswold Airport (formerly Kemble Airfield). As we're restoring our RAF Britannia at Kemble I've been lucky enough to be shown around a couple of times, though normally they are very secretive - all to do with customer confidentiality, so I'm told. From what I've seen their standards of workmanship are very high. Another source of info which you might find helpful is Flypast magazine - both the small ads in the back and the articles which will tell you who's restoring what, and where. I hasten to point out I'm not on commission from Flypast, it's just a mag I enjoy reading. Is there a specific project you're working on or interesting in? Adrian Barrell
Maurice Hammond near me rebuilds Merlins. Many well known aircraft in the UK have his engines in and they have a reputation for being very smooth. Vintech do a large range of engines. They do not do Merlins though have rebuilt Kestrels. Scammell4199
I am intersted in all warbird restos, and the engines in particular, they are such magnificent pieces of engineering, same goes for other interesting engines like Adrians A57 multibank and the Napier Sabre H24. When working on my own projects i always enjoy working on the engines, and would love to work on big aero V12s and radials. Being throughly hacked off in my current job i'm investigating all possible avenues including a career change into working on such beasts, but for now i have the rebuild of the Gardner 6LW out of my Scammell to keep me happy.
