Hi Jim,

That is interesting, we had 26100013, bought it from Keith Gott in its original state, about 25,000 miles on the clock. Removed the special body sides and prepared it for a rally across Australia in 1992, which we took part in as a team from a REME workshop. We kept the original engine in it. I do have photos of it before and after, but no able to access them at present.

There was a brass plate inside showing it was re-allocated to the RAF later in its service life. Vehicle was brought back to UK and I believe it is still around.

regards, Richard

There are two answers to your question.

The first is that you are only the temporary custodian of that vehicle and to do so would "change" it from original.

The second is that it is yours and you decide.

Obviously you have a speed and power issue, ever thought of an overdrive?

Interesting vehicle Jim. It's yours to decide on obviously, but if the vehicle has historical significance doing a particular specialised job it might be a shame to alter it from original, especially as a well sorted 2.25 engine can be reasonably quick. I have almost finished converting a 1968 109 SW to 200 Tdi, but it has no special past and will be my daily driver, purely because I prefer the look of an old Land Rover over a later 110. I will also need to tow regularly and the 2.25 diesel would have needed a total rebuild, so that's why I went the Tdi route.

Good luck with it, whatever you choose to do.

Interestingly I see it has the single plate with the letter T stamped in it. What wood does it have on the vehicle? I had always thought that the T referred to a vehicle having wood used in its construction and that this showed that the wood had been "tropicalised" or preserved in some way.

Any comments

My other half has a prototype landrover and the query over what engine came up. Initially we didn't have the original engine so the choice was a bit more open. We were going to fit a 200tdi to it. The idea being that it would be a bit more useable (it should carry a lot of built on gear so a lot heavier than standard) also that any engine would be wrong. The final point we came to was that if you bolt a 200tdi in and do not permanently modify anything and you keep the original engine then it's no loss. Easy enough to do in this way and it would only take a day to return to complete original with no one any the wiser.

Putting a V8 in or something else where you are going to have to cut panels etc.... is a completely different matter.

Cheers

Ed

If your only going to be using the truck for shows etc I'd say keep the 2 1/4 engine thats in it and enjoy its originality, if it is to be used everyday and the Tdi can be fitted without too much modifications that can be reversed then why not, I'm planning to put a Tdi in a series 1 that has had lots of different engines in and used and abused but it will become my daily driver where as my swb ffr 2a still has its original 2 1/4 petrol as I want it to be as original as possible and my 109 has a 2.5 petrol and LPG as I use it more then the ffr but not everyday though
