rippo
Hello, This bedford MW has come up for sale on milweb, www.airbornegarage.com I'm more of the thinking its been used as a film prop, But may well be wrong. It's not of dunkirk era, but may well have been captured else where. Can anyone recognise any of the body work fitted to the mw from other vehicles, the dash panel and steering wheel have been changed. I'm not sure why the front has been altered so much, usually it is just the bodys and cabs that get altered, other than to make it look like something else. thanks
mcspool
Rippo, The Germans converted a number of British vehicles, mostly captured ex-BEF vehicles. Being Germans, they did this thorougly and according to strict guidelines. All the pictures of converted MWs show a bodywork identical to the one in the picture. It is the same body type fitted to other chassis of various manufacturers. The conclusion I draw is that this is not a WW2 conversion (umbau). It is either a film prop as suggested or possibly an ex-Fire Brigade truck, many of which were converted from army trucks after WW2. Especially Austria got a large number of British and Canadian army trucks to rebuild theit essential services, many of which were in opration decades after the war. My EUR 0,02 worth. . . H. Richard Farrant
Hello,This bedford MW has come up for sale on milweb, www.airbornegarage.com Hi John, I see the engine was overhauled by 750 Base Workshop REME, they were situated in Italy, and had a rebuild line for Bedford and Ford engines. of course this engine could have been fitted at a later date. My view of it is a fire engine, going by the wide platform in front of the rad grille, and a large cutout for what was probably a front mounted water pump. as Hanno said, Austria had some MW fire trucks and if the vehicle had come up from Italy, going by the engine, that would all fit in. mcspool
possibly an ex-Fire Brigade truck, many of which were converted from army trucks after WW2. Especially Austria got a large number of British and Canadian army trucks to rebuild theit essential services, many of which were in opration decades after the war I knew I had seen a similar conversion before, see http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5307 for a picture of a Morris-Commercial C8 converted into a Fire Brigade truck. The subject MW is currently listed for sale on MilWeb, see http://www.milweb.net/classifieds/large_image.php?ad=59282&cat=
mcspool
The source of the pic above, http://www.wien.gv.at/feuerwehr/geschichte/oldtimernach.htm, lists a Bedford personnel carrier with pump, but alas no picture. Here's another Bedford MW fire truck: http://www.historical-fire-engines.com/img2414.search.htm And a couple more http://www.fireworld.at/cms/page.php?id=75, http://forum.ktr.nl/index.php?topic=8.15, http://www.ff-grafenschlag.at/htm/chronik.htm, http://www.ffabsdorf.at/ueber_uns/doku_foto.htm You get the picture!
