North Africa vehicle numbering

Can anyone tell me what the numbering sequence was for Noth Africa 1942?

 

I had a stab at numbering the Diamond T based on adding 373 (my chassis number) to thew list in Pat Ware's book and got H777743. However I have looked at a picture of a North African T and the number starts H49, making me think I am on the wrong track. I am close to ordering the stencils (Tony Pearson will at last get his order) but I am having some doubts as to the accuracy of my research.

 

Can anyone help?

There are no groups of numbers specific for N. Africa or any other theatre, but going through the contracts, I do not see any starting 49.

 

Here are those for the 40 ton tractor ( does not state whether 980 or 981 )

H777453 to 777461 Contract no SM2059

H4765269 to 4765354 " "

H777475 to 777764 " "

 

 

I think all the other contracts on the list are later ones.
