  1. Well, nearly there! She is now a runner and sound quite sweet apart from a noisy alternator (see question in other thread). Canvas is on, just a few bits and bobs before we can hit the road. The front lifting rings arrived from Mike and a new pin is in production so a big thanks due there. And she now has a rebuilt Carter carb. I'll post a pic when everything is complete.
  2. The jeep is now up and running following restoration, (not quit on the road though) but the alternator (conversion) is quite noisy, a 'whirring'. I dont remember this pre-restoration. Any suggestions? Could it have 'dried out'? is the belt a bit tight?. I wonder if its the bearings, but I would have noticed it before the resto I would think.
  3. Ian, would it be worth dropping by the Steam railway at Didcot? I'm sure they must have had cast makers plates made for their choo choo's over the years.
  4. Very nice Ian, hope you have a great trip! Will catch up on your return, looking forward to seeing the collection!
  5. Can anyone tell me what a Zenith 30 VIG - 5 fits? (Its for sale in classifieds)
  6. All helpful stuff. At the moment she is firing up but 9 times out of 10 dies after a short while. I suspect a fueling problem of some sort, so am still tinkering. When I have managed to keep her going she runs ok, although tickover is a bit rough as though maybe running rich, so I think the fuel pump is ok.
  7. Thanks for your input, I will have to have a tinker and see what I can find, no i didnt put anything on the threads so this might be the first step.
  8. Although I havent used the Jeep out ans about yet, whilst tinkering, I have noticed that the 'head' of fuel at the carb seems to drop quite quickly, meaning quite some cranking of the engine to get fuel back up. Is this evidence of a problem? Would it be worth fitting a non return valve?
  9. Thanks for your interest gents. There is one under restoration nr Gatwick, havent come across any others yet, but I havent been to many MV do's recently.
  10. Finally got her out of the garage. Still loads to do, but the end is in sight.
  11. Cheaper than a comparable (condition wise) Jeep I suppose, and ALOT rarer.
  12. Its great that you have been given access. I first visited this yard about 20 years ago (oh eck:shocked:) and the proprietor was most helpful in supplying two Dodge engines (long block not WC type). And more recently he helped a good friend with a pre war Albion engine. Understandably he doesnt want sightseers, he is running a business from there after all, although it would make a great visiter attraction to us types! So thanks for sharing the pictures with us, yards such as this wont be around forever.
  13. Certainly look very much like Bedford MW but could be from a number of British trucks of the 40's - 50's period. I remember my Austin K2 seats were very similar and we have a 1950's commer Fire Engine, again with the same style.
  14. Burlen Fuel Systems of Salisbury would be a good place for advice.
  15. My brother was once towed on a muddy show field. In his haste he put the rope around axle and track rod! Luckily there was a blacksmith displaying on site. He took the track rod, got it red hot and with one clout on the anvil it was staight as a die! Might be worth finding a 'good' smithy. Lovely restoration work by the way.
  16. VERY nice Ian, come on get your finger out and get 'em done:D
  17. Almost as bad as those with old AFS trucks restored as MV's!
  18. Looks like good fun, one for the M38 when finished if I may? I could really use that Fire Station too:cool2:
  19. Coming on nicely, the hose and collecting heads were a lucky find! I have just started work on a commer QX fire appliance so any pointers on commer bits (service parts etc to start with) would be most helpful. I think the brakes may need similar treatment too. It is a very part time, in between my own stuff project so will take a while!
  20. What a great little 'do' to get away from the festivities! A handful of stalls selling a good variety of parts and uniform, plus Universal Jeeps 'shop' open. The team at UJ were very hospitable with FREE tea and coffee all morning, bacon rolls at very reasonable price and just a cheery friendly way about them. Personally I sold a few bits (no charge for a stall either!) and bought a few bits for my project, so a great few hours among fellow sufferers!
  21. Isnt 'vehicle archeology' fascinating?. Of course, the 101ab markings may be original, didnt every trooper get issued with his own personal Jeep?
