  1. Good work Ian, especially as you are incapacitated! So I suppose you can tell us you can restore a truck single handed!
  2. The strip down has begun. The starter has been changed for a 12v unit (M38s were 24V) and an alternator fitted. The rest of the electrics are well past their best and will have to be renewed. I am working towards removing the body. So far most bolts have undone quite easily.
  3. Can someone check their V5 and tell me what the DVLA body type designation is for a Jeep please?. I am sorting the paperwork for registration and dont want to delay things by putting down 'wrong' information. Thanks!:-D
  4. I haven't done a great deal yet - got the MVT verification inspection tomorrow then will get cracking on her. I have really fallen for the look of the M38, and the Korean war era is a period I hadnt really read about before.
  5. What is the law on having a vehicle marked as Military Police? Should markings be obscured on the publc highway as with a preserved police car? I am thinking of marking my M38 as an MP vehicle but having to remove or cover signage seems a bit of a pain, especially as MP jeeps of that era seem to have 'Military Police ' painted on the sides as well as the front.
  6. Can anyone give me an idea on what the cost of blasting a Jeep tub is likely to be, or even recommend anyone in reasonable distance of Berkshire?
  7. Thank you. Its nice to see another alive and kicking - and in regular use too! I had never really taken much notice of the M38 until I looked at this one. I think they are rather under rated in the UK, seem much more popular in the US.
  8. Sounds like a great example, would love to see some pics if you have any? Are there any plans to take it to any shows this year?
  9. Glad she got there ok, I'm sure she will settle down with her new friends. Perhaps if you have time you could pick up the restoration thread where I left it? I should have known better than to look at a Jeep with a)Money in my pocket b)An empty garage
  10. Thanks all. Yes Rivet, I shall keep the pics coming hopefully. She was up at Dallas', although owned by a 3rd party who I happened to know. Delivery date is 12/51 and the orginal US number is on the bonnet, sorry, hood:).
  11. Hi all. I have just come over to 'the dark side' and bought a 'J' thing in the shape of a '51 M38 (see resto thread). I have owned ww2 Jeeps before but know much less about the M38. Are there any other owners out there?
  12. I had a day without an MV, didnt like it, collected the new project today. My love for Jeeps has been in the closet for a while now. But now its out there!
  13. That will certainly be a sight. Some time ago (about 30 odd years oooer!:undecided:) Boadicea was owned by a gentleman near us and a good friend of my Dad drove it for him. My brother and I spent many happy miles in the coal boxes having rides! Thanks for bringing back a happy memory!
  14. Drove her out of the garage for the first time today. Turned her off on the drive and the b****y thing would start again! I ended up taking out the plugs and winding her back into the garage a la Ice Cold in Alex! The carb seems to be flooding quite alot. Still, I am quite please with the first view of the body out in the open:D
  15. Yep, 12v. Thanks everyone for the pointers.
  16. Can anyone recommend a supplier of battery leads, either off the roll or made up with ends to order?
  17. The wiring is now complete (apart from new battery leads) and all lights working. She is running better and better, still tinkering.
  18. I finally got around to sending my verification letter and all the other bits off to DVLA last week. A nice new V5 arrived today with a suitable registration number.:-D
  19. Have a look on the wwii reenacting forum mate, there is LOADS of discussion on the subject there.
  20. This one served at UKAEA Harwell Oxon. It is certainly very restorable. Might glow in the dark though!:-D
  21. Good improvisation RR! You should have left the teeth on as a talking point.:nut:
  22. Following a 'hiccup' (see my thread in lubrication section) she is now running quite well and with good oil pressure. The timing needs a bit of adjustment I think, and the vacuum advance retard on the dizzy doesnt seem to be working. Any advice on these greatfully received.
  23. Mr Farrant, Sir, you are bang on once again. Having dropped the sump and cranked the engine over (trapping a finger in the process OUCH!), I could see the oil pump shaft was not turning:nut:. What can I say? I know I am among friends so can admit my mistakes. I recall when removing the dizzy, undoing BOTH set screws and lock nuts, I guess at this point the oil pump slipped out of drive. I am not a mechanic, just a Builders Yard Foreman/HGV driver with (most of the time) enhusiasm. Anyway I now have around 25psi oil pressure on tick over and all is well with the world again:-D. Thanks Rivet for your encouragement too!
