  1. Butch, you say it was a stand by engine rather than standby generator, just an idea but is it a fluid flywheel and not a one way roller clutch?? Were you aware that Scammell helped develop the 6PC630 and were responsible for the induction side, at one stage a 3 carb set up was being considered? You may be able to use the oil pumps, pipes and sump from your old engine as Bernard has suggested.
  2. No, it is the same with all the major supermarkets. A supplier will come up with a new product which is trialed for a short period after which the bean counters get involved to maximise the profits. This results in either a lower quality/quantity product or removal of the product in cases where the supplier cannot produce at the price level demanded. I see it all the time as I am involved with supplier collections for a large chain.
  3. Bad news Bernard, the deal you struck has broken the camel's back and your warrantee has just evaporated::shocked: Denman Tire LLC has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, and will liquidate due to poor economic conditions, particularly in the automotive sector. The move will put some 260 employees out of work. Since November, more than 250 workers have already been laid off at the US company. Denman tried but failed to find a buyer who could reopen the plant or secure help from the government. As a result, Sanford Pensler, Denman Tire CEO, began Chapter 7 proceedings. The company said in its bankruptcy filing that on 31 March it will provide the court with a list of its creditors.
  4. Tony, there is nothing wrong with your drawing and it highlights the problem perfectly. We have a similar issue with recovery monkeys that extract one halfshaft before performing a lift and tow. Apart from oil everywhere and road dirt entering the bearings the differential gears which are steel on steel pins end up spinning at a huge rate and blueing the surfaces. Amazingly we have never had one seize - yet. Mike, without seeing the alignment drawings for the front propshaft it is difficult to comment but could the vibration be resulting from unequal angles being run by the UJs? Rather than cutting the spigot can you not just leave out the rear part of the output shaft leaving the front part to support the stationary front prop?
  5. I believe the usual method is to raise the leading axle just clear of the road allowing the trailing front axle to support 5 tons or so. Care must be taken as it is possible to bend the chassis by attempting to take the entire weight under the leading axle, especially if the load has shifted forwards in an impact.
  6. Usual way to recover an artic with lift and tow is to plumb in to the trailer air ports which at least gives trailer brakes operated from the recovery vehicle although the tractor rear axle(s) remain unbraked. Recovering a laden 8 wheeler is problematic as in most cases it will weigh more than the recovery vehicle and in usually has no means of readily being plumbed into its brake system. I also seem to remember that an unladen artic is classed as one trailer but two if it is laden so needing a locomotive to recover.
  7. Exactly, what a minefield. Perhaps recovery crews should all use Militant mk3s and push casualties with the built in push pads rather than towing. Now that would get VOSA going.:-D
  8. 7(1) suggests you can tow any distance any destination and (2) says you cannot, or am I reading this incorrectly?
  9. The large blue chip company I work for run a fleet of 80 ageing DAF CF85 artic tractors of which at least 2 break down with major issues most weeks. We have a contract with a large well known recovery company who are quite happy to suspend tow an artic however far and to whatever destination we want, completely flouting current legislation. To the best of my knowledge there have never been any prosecutions.
  10. Welcome to the forum John, I did hear a rumour that 9 squadron came along on the day to observe the proceedings..... :cool2:
  11. Radek, it is not a prototype Explorer but a Pioneer R100 gun tractor that has been converted to 6x6 with a crude front axle conversion. Here is a better view of the driven front axle: I like the caption, it suggests that it is 'straightening out' the Crusader tank!
  12. Some of the shots of Fred show him drilling holes in his 'pit props'. Knowing his dislike of the 'dynamite men' it would be brave of me to suggest that he sometimes blew the props apart, but such a method would result in far more control of the demolition.

  14. As the Foden axles are only rated at 10t each, the max would be 30t:cool2:. With a suspended tow there would be far less than 10t on the front axle and if you do the sums you will find the Foden has a very low legal suspended tow capacity in civilian use. Where did you find the recovery vehicle axle weights, and did you take into account that they may have to be twin wheels to qualify?
  15. What type of front axle did they use, an undriven standard one or a simple beam?
  16. Simple explanation. A lead/acid battery consists of several cells , each producing circa 2 volts and wired in series to give say 12 volts. With a used battery there will usually be one cell slightly stronger than the others, and if the battery is left connected to a load the stronger cell will attempt to charge the remaining cells in the reverse direction via the load once the other cells are fully discharged. This can even happen if the load consists of conducting moisture between the battery terminals.
  17. Did you mean Arctic Mike, I've been trying to work that one out all afternoon?:???
  18. Where did you get the 125 cu ft from, using the data I made it 990?
  19. Welcome aboard Lifer, were you told to refer to Uxbridge as being southwest of London to confuse the enemy?:cool2:
  20. I wonder if this only applies to certain tyres, or rather the mix of ingredients in certain tyres? I have seen artic trailer wheels that have got so hot from a sticking brake that the paint has burned off right up to the tyre bead but without the tyre exploding. Antarmike had quite a bonfire on his Dyson but again no explosion. Some time ago on the M6 one of our girlie drivers had a N/S front blowout on an artic. As it was 2AM plod came and sat with her for about half an hour until the tyre fitter arrived and began to jack the axle up. Suddenly there was a mighty rush of air and the tyre turned into a roaring inferno which promptly gutted the truck.
  21. Yes I realised that hence the smiley, but the regulation does seem rather vague. In the USA/Canada it is quite a common way to tip grain transporters.
  22. Good get out clause :cool2: 'a vehicle so constructed that it can be unloaded by part being tipped sideways or rearwards;' Most MVs have lifting eyes at the front and few vehicles would retain their load when fully tipped rearwards or sideways. All our 190 trailers at work have the bars clamped not welded to the chassis.
  23. Is that at the museum near Tromso Marty, I still havn't had a chance to get there?
  24. Semi trailer with dolly suggests that it's primary use is as an articulated unit and that it can be converted to a full trailer with the dolly in the photo. Either way the wheel and tyre combination seems way over the top for a payload of 20 tons, might it be intended for low ground pressure? It also looks as though the front end folds down to form a loading ramp once the tractor or dolly is removed.
