  1. Thanks for those pictures, Les! First evidence of a soft cab on spreading duty. Note the mandatory tow chain, a feature of most if not all gmc spreaders!!
  2. One plus point about air suspension is that you can dump the air to significantly lower the rear end, which makes for safer loading. Oh sorry, am I on the wrong thread? Go on, Special Vehicles (a taxation class) - you know it makes sense....
  3. Mum Cartwons, it's getting close to bedtime story time! for us big kids
  4. Jack recently posted two pics of an Autocar with a painted bridge plate on the curved surface of the bonnet front - see Heavyweights in American Trucks section. Do I take it the plates with curved edge (as for example sold by Marcus Glenn) are British Post War or what?
  5. At last - someone has corrected the trim on this thread and got it flying nicely Good points Richard. Regarding rigid plant trucks, you also need to consider high centre of gravity when loaded. Decent trucks with low bed height don't come cheap. If you're not put off yet, Madrat, a truck with drum brakes that stands for a long periods should ideally have the brake adjusters wound off (or air pressure maintained with brakes off) so that the brakes don't fail due to drum ovality whenever you get it tested. :argh:
  6. My mistake, I meant "Special Vehicles" (that's the Taxation Class).
  7. Well just register it as special types £180 or whatever it is and be done with it. Then if you say it is also historic they may just register it as historic without any trouble. As has been said before, it's a bit of a lottery
  8. Best check with a grown-up , but I've worked on basis that private HGV taxation allows you to use a truck for your own joys, i.e. NOT hire and reward, subject to the truck being ministry tested and used within its plated carrying capacity. Tax was £160 last time I did it wth an 8 wheel tipper some years back. What width is Stalwart then???????? Seems a bit strange to me  And what width does movement order kick in?
  9. Have you got a battery and some long wires?........:shake::shake::shake:
  10. It's going to be a long, long day now waiting for that story - thanks 6x6! If Ivor the Engine features too, I'll be just over the moon :-D
  11. Each year they have a theme for the internal transports which ferry V.I.P.s and others around the circuit and carparks. First year I went they were all Willys jeeps - great!!! Last time it was Mk1 Cortinas all done up as "Glamcabs" from Carry on Cabbie
  12. Anita - before the days of the Foden and Snowcart, am I right in thinking you had a bit of a fling with a 20T Constructor? I seem to remember seeing a photograph somewhere, it looked quite tidy with a cut-down body and breakdown crane. Please post some pics and some information on it, please, please, please, please Of course I'm only asking for 6x6 and AndyFowler's benefit you understand.....
  13. The original Rolls C6NFL. The LPG conversions sound a great idea. BTW I have a partially dismembered Meadows petrol in a Constructor skeleton if anyone needs any bits. No dealers please
  14. Don't forget to get your best olive drab overalls dry cleaned and pressed before Saturday - will Mrs. Vince Hopper be in white or camouflage? I take it you have all the necessary technical, operator and parts manuals to hand just in case? All the best to you both!
  15. Now I think we'll find out where those dancing girls have been hanging out.....Have a good one!

CW, I used to have the problem on the old forum 'cos I was only logged in for X minutes. When I changed log-in duration to 'always remain logged in' it stopped. Don't know if this new forum has similar settings but if so might this be the problem?? Very annoying I'm sure. Engineers report on boat engine please.
  17. Here is a link to a supplier of technical manuals on cd - they list under 'engineering' the manual TM5-1174 Quick Way Truck Shovel Model-E www.easy1productions.com Hope this is of interest to you.
  18. Euclid dumptruck job is similar but a fair bit smaller. Doors both open, gantry built straight through cab and Tirfor winch to take weight of box. If girder is packed to steady forward/aft movement, box can be pulled back without risk of gantry toppling and damaging cab. Why do they say pack the gantry off chassis rails I wonder? No doubt when on site, all is clear.....
  19. Everyone of HMVF - Jack has somehow got hold of the Tankgrad Autocar Manual. If he finds their Autocar Tailer companion to it, heavens knows how bad he will get  Just look what happened to me.... Can someone nearby get around to Jack's place pronto and administer a Ferret Technical Manual or similar anaesthetic?
  20. Hi Big Chris, The first 2 pics you posted show an Explorer which has been mentioned before on the forum - I'm sure pics were posted but I cannot find them (we had a crash you know...). It sold at auction last year and was recently sold again to an enthusiast. It remains in Suffolk. Any reason you didn't buy it? Seemed remarkably clean and tidy. Tony
  21. Is it a very long Hot Dog Van (as in a van for very long Hot Dogs)?
  22. Bet you won't ever see anything like THIS at Tanks in Town though..... www.superstock.com/stock-photos-images/1060-123
  23. I think you may well be right - perhaps a case of 'we see what we want to see sometimes'.....not that I'm saying the Federal is an ugly truck, you understand :rofl:
