  1. Federal wreckers were used by USAAF, remember the discussion on here about the one which Duxford slung out of the American hangar and which went abroad? Stormin thinks the gear (apart from longer extending jib) is as per WLF M1A1. Certainly looks that way.
  2. Deuceman, thanks for the photos. I've known this tanker on and off for the past 14 years or so. It came from a large breakers yard in Hertfordshire, and only survived because it was used until recently as a static diesel bowser. The condition has certainly deteriorated in this time. It had a friend in the same yard which was still complete but in a hopeless state 10 years back, now only the tank remains. History? I can't give you much - after WW2 it continued in use on an airbase (note US AIR FORCE lettering, not US ARMY AIR FORCE). In 1957 it was refurbished with a special lining - see photo of plate attached to top steps. Work carried out at Preston by Wincanton Garages. This might have been when the access doorways were gassed into the tank baffle plates? Will take pic when I can get inside :shake: The tanker was sold at auction (along with several others over the years, including some of the 2,000 gallon type) to the dealer who eventually sold it (sorry, her - Agnes) to me.
  3.:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:It's all too much for me
  4. I reckon that when Jack asked them to send him a pic of the Federal "wreck", they thought he meant the Federal "wrecker" :-D:-D:-D I believe it is a C2 type, and I'm fairly certain the crane is different, Stormin. Anyone seriously interested should pm me.
  5. It is an Aveling Barford Calf Dozer (not military). It is for dozing
  6. I can only see one Dave, an ex Pickfords Constructor. But there are two Matadors, the ex Withams RAF with generator? body and a claimed rare Mk2 ex Garnhams of Diss........also a tidy looking M38 Jeep www.cheffins.co.uk look at vintage sales, catalogues
  7. That's a relief - I was worried you would send Patweazle up to sort me out
  8. That's the one, Degsy - Ohtish Redding, singing "Sitting on the dock by the bay, watching the engine get stripped right down"
  9. Have you stopped taking your Scammell medication again, Andy? :-D
  10. I've seen the photos and the "rust-treated" model - looks a lovely old truck. I think he certainly did the right thing keeping that irreplacable patina of old age (like his van ).
  11. No worries, but it's nowhere near as bad as Wayne might have made out
  12. Well isn't that just our luck :argh: Incidentally, Kewelde's reference to the tanker at a supposedly Italian airport in this series - there is a pic of a slightly modified tractor and trailer in an Italian construction plant yard in one of Pat Ware's two recent books.
  13. Has he just buried a jeep? You know, WW2 East Anglian airbase re-enactment.....
  14. What's that? Carpet in the Workshop? That is going a step too far Howard - to show off your really nice workshop is bad enough punishment for most of us, to show the carpet is "rubbing it in a bit" :-D Or perhaps the workshop is in fact an extension of your lounge? :cool2: Goes away to draw up lounge extension to run by Mrs. N.O.S.
  15. Well done with those pics, Les. My guess it is one and the same truck, I had a pic of it on the beach at Blackpool (it was used to de-bog artic dumpers of sand which occasionally got struck) but can't find it now.
  16. Don't worry - according to the latest news section of highways.gov.uk it's all on land already owned by DOT
  17. Just googled M25 widening and 27 to 30 has all been detail planned (see links to Contract Journal), but no indication of when....or if now, given our perilous state!
  18. I've heard they are supposed to be putting an extra lane each side of M25 between M11 and Dartford crossing before the Olympics to relieve expected traffic chaos - anyone able to substantiate this? (they'd better get a move on!!!)
  19. That didn't by any chance come from Elveden a few years ago?
  20. I tried hard, but there was no way Mrs. N.O.S. was going to put on a pair of Levis and the 1940's equivalent of a high-viz fleece and pose with Agnes, so here is the before and after shot.... Agnes is in fact working on a Heil 2,000 gallon single axle tanker, but the pumping compartment is fairly similar to the Standard Steel Works 4,000 gallon unit. Great photo, useful info for me is confirmation of the use of blue lettering, wording on engine panel, and the enormous paint run on rear fender, which I will have absolutely no trouble in re-creating :-D But which way should the hose be wound.....
  21. And just imagine all the ground crews, waiting out there on the field for hours, listening desperately for any sound of another returning plane......
  22. Erm, she smoke a bit then, does she? What truck did you get?
  23. The are some stunning photos of aircraft factory workers on that website!! Just to let you know what Agnes Cliemka is doing at the back of the bowser - she is spooling on a hose using the air motor - driven hose reeler (note chain drive to inside of reel and air motor by her hand). If you look at the bowser there is a large air tank under left rear of chassis, fed by a compressor driven by the pumping engine. Oh dear I'm becoming obsessed...... By the way, I've decided to name the trailer "Agnes" after weaselnut's pic :-D
