  1. FANTASTIC B+W pics of the tanks there, Rippo - bet they'd be wonderful to see in the flesh, but can't cope with diving  Can you give us any story about them?
  2. Thanks, underlift! The Antar was getting a bit delicate around the cab back then, so good that they are titivating her up a bit.
  3. Anyone know how much clobber was lost at sea during the war? I've seen figures in the past somewhere for total shipping weight losses, but that includes the ships and I've never seen a breakdown of what went down. Any figures for number of vehicles for example? Must have been countless liberty ship loads of trucks, armour etc sunk in N.Atlantic. Some fascinating finds to be had for divers, perhaps it'd be nice to leave them down there for them to enjoy. When you think about it, these two tanks are but a drop in the ocean compared to all the gear lost (well ok, two drops....)
  4. Without these enthusiastic soldiers a lot of stuff would have gone by now. At the time of the Scamell Register visit the Diamond T 'Old Joe' and the Antar were also made available for driving - do you know if they are still at Bulford, and still runners, ekawrecker?
  5. Dunno, it didn't come with any paperwork and there's no maker's plate on it, but at least it has a proper engine (Gardner 5LW) :-D
  6. According to my dad it certainly won't steer on a ploughed field with 6T of lime on the back :cool2:
  7. Too right Les, I saw the bridging units under construction during a visit to Tolpits Lane - what a smashing truck - a well balanced clean design. Oh well, we can but dream. Tony We're all anoraks in one way or another.....
  8. Here are some pics snapped at a special 'Scammell Register' day at Bulford Camp afew years back - ISTR the first of the Seddon Atkinson Crusader replacements had just arrived. We were not to be trusted with a loaded trailer (yes, we all got to have a drive!!). The servicing bay was a sight - and work was not limited to routine stuff - some pretty serious repairs were being undertaken there. One Commander was used as ballast to give the Crusader a bit of work do (well it stopped the trailer bouncing about anyway). I don't remember having a drive of that - note the unsuspecting Mario about to be placed on a Charge by the fast approaching NCO for having his hands in his pockets on the Parade ground....sacre bleu!
  9. ROSIE! Get on here quick - R3 is begining to sound serious about this one!!!!
  10. Might that have been Southern Counties Trading? And was it that company who traded as several different names before becoming Winchester Marine, who now have a 2nd depot at RAF Binbrook, Market Rasen , Lincs and have simply loads of useful trucks, engines, gearboxes and other stuff as well as a lot of ex MOD kit, or am I talking complete scribble again?
  11. Still for sale, try www.securemeasures.co.uk.
  12. There's been a Cummins 6B engined Stoly for sale for about 9 months in a boatyard - looks tidy from the pic. I posted details on For sale/wanted thread some time back (unless it got lost). That would sound nice, and depending on which model it might have enough power too? You'd just need to do the clutch job then :-D Come on, no excuses. I'll look for ad later.
  13. Yes, No and everything in between On this forum, you don't actually need any more than a bit of enhusiasm for the vehicles. It costs but a little time to dream.........then you're hooked :-D
  14. Slick 50 sounds more like a laxative, you sure it's for vehicles and not humans/horses?
  15. Thanks for that, Antar. Can you help with any additional info on the history / ownership of this truck before you acquired her? Denial is just a stage of becoming an anorak.
  16. Dylan - Boise, Idaho was where the 388th Bomb Goup was first activated back in 1943 (at Gowen Field), eventually flying B17s from Suffolk - any significance that you have a plane as your logo? Oh, and welcome back, and more on your fun job please!
  17. Catweasel, could you pm me the moly coddle stuff info too please?:
  18. They were not take up by British Army, but were supplied to Jordan and others. I've often pondered the question why we kept on with 'oversized' tank transporters like Commander when all around us went on to lightweight high-powered commercial 6x6 tractors like MAN and MERC? The only obvious reason is drastically improved stability in soft ground provided by the slightly wider axles, but can anyone provide any practical experience-based reasons as to if and why our units were significantly better performers, e.g. during Gulf campains?
  19. I would just like to apologise to the grey annoraked person smelling a bit high at W+P, who I kept on calling 'Andy' and who obvously thought I was out of my tree.....I didn't think he was very responsive
  20. Very clean - not much Rustavi on that...... Whatever will turn up next on HMVF?
  21. Must be a stuffed steering box. Assuming it's an old TK Bedford, I might just have a good steering box, and I'm sure Catweazle will be along shortly to offer you a good price for fitting it. You've then just got to work out a route which enables you to do turn right only turns to get to his place (if anyone can do it, you can). He has a nice old Champ for a courtessey car.....
  22. You'd best not visit my yard then - you'll need some serious psychotherapy afterwards :-D:-D:-D
