  1. Mark, Do you have a knocking noise as well as the visual wobble, especially when the steering is on lock? If it is not something simple like loose wheel nuts, bent rim, etc, then it could be a wheel bearing loose or collapsed, or a tracta joint that is siezing. Drive it around on lock, and listen for noises. When a joint has got a sieze, it semi welds to the other part, ending with a hole on one and a pimple on the other part, if the joint is moved of the normal line of drive to say a slight lock, then the pimple will ride out of the hole and the shaft rotation can be "notchy", ........a possible cause. I worked on Foxs (along with all the other vehicles that Her Majesty had), from when they entered service around 1975 to there demise around 1994. Richard
  2. Hardy Ferret, Ahh.. a man after my own heart, I curse the metric system, brought up with Imperial and will always be using the inch side of the ruler. When you are working on good old British engineering, it makes no sense to measure everything in metric. Some of us have to uphold the British traditions, like Whitworth threads, etc. Richard
  3. Lester, I think the British Army only trialled the Moke, possibly why they are hard to find, because there would not have been many. I have seen two Australian Army Mokes in England at rallies in the past, although they may be one and the same vehicle as one was from Sussex and the other belonged to someone in Kent, seen on different occasions. Richard
  4. Meteor, It is easier than using photobucket or whatever. When you write a new message, look under the message box and click on "additional options". You will see "Attach:" and an empty box, if you click browse to the right, it will bring up you computer files to insert photos from. when message is posted it will show a small pick on the message, but if you click it, it comes up to full size. Richard
  5. Alex, Clive is refering to official manuals published by the War Office and so on. There has only been one EMER (British tech publication system for military equipment, etc) that has been De-restricted and that was the one for the Austin Champ. Richard
  6. Jack, You must have had the bad luck of contacting somebody with a negative attitude. When I have done it in the past, the local branches have contacted me prior to November, to bring my vehicle along to designated locations and anymore that could be mustered. Richard
  7. Seeing as how I instigated this thread, I have to report that I have not had a virus show up on AVG. The site is still not opening up on front page, but comes up with forum. I click the header, on photos, and then get front page so that posts since last visit can be checked. Although I did delete cookies for this forum, I am not at all sure that was the reason for the problem as now more info has come to light in other posts. It does seem odd that some people are getting a virus show, where others are not. Richard
  8. Neil, This one is for you, :-). Apologies, some unknown reason, I put your name instead of Larry. Must have been reading one of your posts previous and your name stuck in my mind. Thats my excuse, course it could have been a "senior moment", seem to get a few of those  Richard
  9. If it is electrical, is it 12, 24 or 240 volts? Is it in current British Army use? Richard
  10. Neil, Go to http://www.veteransagency.mod.uk/service_records/service_records.html and you will see what service records are now held by National Archive / PRO, they are mostly pre 1920's. Also it will explain how to locate later records. Richard
  11. Jack, Actual capacity of a M20 is 496cc, but it is always known as a 500. Regarding insurance groups, I do not know, because mine has always been on classic mv insurance schemes, which do not, from memory have groups, unlike normal m/cycle insurance. Richard
  12. Jack, Fair comment if not attached to a group or club, but it if your are a member it does show the club up in good light with the general public. Whatever, you have to liase with RBL local branch, you are issued with an authorised collectors card and all the necessary items, even posters if required. They tell you where they would like you to go, it is not the thing to just rock up outside the supermarket with your vehicle, it has to be arranged with the management. Usually, the shops, if you are outside a particular one, will be helpful and provide hot drinks. Often a RBL member will be there as well, which is good because some of them are interested in the old vehicles and may not have seen some of them for years if they have not been to shows. Richard
  13. Jack, As I believe you are in the MVT, contact their Dorset Area, they will already be in touch with the local RBL branches without a doubt. Some years ago, MVT and RBL got together and accepted our assistance in collecting. Myself and a few others were often assigned to out of town superstores, Saturday Market, etc. in my home town of Ashford. Initially I seem to remember making contact with a RBL county co-ordinator. After the first year, they then will contact you to check if available. If you look back through Windscreen mags you will often see a feature of photos from the various Areas, of Poppy Day collecting. Code of Conduct? Well I always dress in something smart and casual without looking like an extra from a war film, green trousers, army jumper, that sort of thing and the other thing is not to entice people to donate, they will come to you. It is amazing how the very small children are eager to put money in the box. Richard
  14. Tyler, I have a 1951 KLG plug book for stationary engines and it gives the Champion 6M as a US made plug, equivalent number for a British Champion was 17. Go to The Green Spark Plug Co., http://www.gsparkplug.com and you will find the modern equivalent of Champion 17 is now D9 with a copper core and they are available at a good price. Only thing is that your picture appears to show the outer body of the plug being short, is this critical or would a normal height plug do? Richard
  15. Just found out why Borat has been a bit quiet lately. Big spread in dail paper on how he is upsetting Kazakhstan government and they had a special meeting to discuss the situation. Anyway,.......it looks like our man has been away in Cannes, looking for new women to pull the plough, see the attached picture. Richard [attachment deleted by admin]
  16. John, If you use that stuff, just have to remember to wash your hands before having a wee   :-D Richard
  17. Neil, You have not had the Stalwart very long, but from my experience working on them over the years, they kill my back and knees, climbing in and out and laying down across the engine to change a starter or something, not to mention dealing with the brake master cylinders. Ahhh.......I can feel my back aching now, just thinking about it  Anyway Jack, hope you get better soon, from one sufferer to another. Richard
  18. Clive, Getting bored with this one now :-D , so going to have a stab at it. The country you mentioned, was it Iraq? And your object, could it be a promotional item, like a pencil sharpener? Richard
  19. Mr Hardyferret, You could always go over the top and paint your Lightweight like the one in this photo. It was one of five, that I built for the Honourable Artillery Company in 1988, for Royal Salute duties at the Tower of London. Gloss Deep Bronze Green, black chassis, white upholstery, chrome bumpers, etc. Richard [attachment deleted by admin]
  20. Lee, Definitely designed and 15 prototypes built by Daimler. Another case of "the book is wrong" I suspect. Alvis and Daimler were at around that time, both in the British Leyland group, but operating independantly. Daimler was at that time, part of Jaguar, as seen from the badge engineering of their cars. Richard
  21. A question regarding the CVR(W) Fox, why is it being included on an Alvis register, when it was actually built by Royal Ordnance Factory Leeds? The initial prototypes of which there were about 15, were built by Daimler. When they lost the production order to ROF in early 70's, Daimler did not build any more AFV's, excepting the last remnants of Ferret production. Richard
  22. I used to be able to enter the site by http://www.hmvf.co.uk, then this problem started this week, not able to enter, then I added /forum, but still could not get Home page. Cleared all cookies for HMVF and still playing up a bit. I does seem that when I was told to clear cookies, this was actually a general problem judging by other listers with similar probs. Anyway I am able to work around this glitch now, so no worries. regards, Richard
  23. Richard, Glad you asked first, I don't feel so bad now  Cannot figure out why I have not had problems on other sites. Is there a way of clearing cookies on particular websites, so as not disturb anything else? Richard
  24. Jack, I always open this site with http://www.hmvf.co.uk and the front page comes up, news adverts, that one. Today everytime I click on, I get a blank page with a few words at the top, saying something about illegal variable files, etc. then by adding /forum/, I can then get the menu, but it makes it hard to find what messages have come on since last online. Anybody else had this today? Richard
