  1. Things are moving slowly with my special. Forks are being re-bushed and I'm fettling the oil pipes before the tank goes for plating. The manifold is being extended and the flange converted to take a brass Amal 76 carb. Ron
  2. Yes Radek! Why didn't I recognise that thing? The threads are full of paint but they are 14mm plug size. Strange place to put it! As the plugs could be shut against something inside the locker. Better to mount it under the bonnet with two old fashioned plugs as a nice ornament. Ron
  3. Thanks for sending me the pictures Tom. I notice that some rear side locker lids are wooden and some (Like mine) are metal. Anyone know when this change took place? I also wonder what this thing is that is screwed inside my N/S lid? Ron

    Yes the unused contract of Welbikes were sold of to a US department store. (they weren't legal on UK highways). Subsequently quite a few were bought up by a US religious group and painted in blue with chrome for parades.... Mine is a MK1....But not for sale.   8. Yes all Neg earth for that period. Manufacturers went over to poss earth for some time during the 50's and 60's (something to do with battery corrosion?) But they went back to neg earth again. Ron
  9. I don't remember anything L/H thread on these. I have adopted other methods, such as, wedge a bar or screw driver between the floor and slots in the clutch centre hub and gently lean on a socket bar. Better if someone sits on the bike to stop it rising up. Ron
  10. Brad you usually have to shock them undone with a good fitting socket or Ring spanner and a lump hammer. You can stop things turning by putting in gear and apply the back brake. Better if you have a friend or Uncle Stuart to help! Ron
  11. Yep always pretty helpful at Hitchcocks and extremely fast with deliveries. My Co shed a rear wheel bearing in France on the big 65 for 65 tour. They fedex'd a bearing to me within about 12 hours of my call. Cost me about a fiver for the bearing and £65 for Fedex!!! But it saved my holiday. Ron
  12. Likewise with my M20 front frame that I got off you Steve. My bike was completely the same bike, apart from this one bit of tube. I told DVLA the the front tube was damaged and I had to replace it, but they would not wear it. I had to go through the process of re-registering it. Ron
  13. Sorry Chris but that wont work. You can change an engine number in your registration document with DVLA. But not a frame number. It will mean going through the registration process of a barn find which will then give you a new age related reg number. Which is a bit of a palaver!! Have you queried it with the previous owner? The only other alternative is to stamp your frame somewhere with the number in your log book........Just for registration purposes. Leave your original number on the headstock for historical purposes. Since your bike is now MOT exempt, it wont receive too much scrutiny , unless you are involved in something serious. Ron

  18. I concur with Steve Here Ferg. Lately I only attend W&P on a day trip with mates in a car. The distance is too far for me. Goodwood however is much nearer and we don't have to pay £25 and we get fed and watered. Ron

  23. Hi Chris, I'm also in Dorset. The number on your crankcase is the the contract number that your bike was built under. If you read it again with a spy glass, it should read C/13869. Which was a contract demanded in 1942. The other number M over 244 is the inspectors stamp. I'm not sure what the H is at the end of your number, but I'll alert Jan to your post and no doubt he will come back with information. It's very unlikely that you will find out any of it's military use history. We'd all like to know that. Regards Ron
  24. Here is the single steel badge that Steve refers too. 3HW's had simple transfers each side. The contact for the 'Rubber Man' is jeffalanhunter@aol.com (no phone number) Make sure you order the WD type as the pre war Triumphs had a sort of pommel to tuck behind your knee. The modern made grips are nice and soft which makes it easier to get the lip over the steel plate. Ron
