  9. alternator problem it`s not regulating correctly it`s a fault with astras, power sterring is electrical and is one of the first things to pack in as it take the most load from the alternator, the warning light on the dash`s of vauxhalls don`t always work ,while your under the engine near the alternator check for oil leaks from behind the cam belt cover another fault with the h model diesel is the oil pump leaking and the pulley comes off wreaking the engine ,

  14. great photos Jim ,rode the halftrack of Chris Till`s again this year ,saturday saw brisk trading around the 30 or so stalls with punters grabing a bargin or two,the weather held out , sunday looked a little dodgy weather wise and after a heavy rain the night before there was talk of not running the armour on the off road sections , early doors we set off not knowing if the full (usual )route would be taken, the first village stop was no problem with locals taking to the streets to see the convoy pass ,loaded with (ammo) sweets for any children in the firing line we made a slow pace to the field and wood sections ,with an odd breakdown on the route from a variety of vehicles , as we approched the first tight section over a small bridge and into a narrow gully with high banks at the sides the whole convoy stopped ,our half track team sent out scouts to report back and found the guys on dispatch bikes taking a fence down ,a humvee was stuck in the mud and had to be moved to one side ,on recovery of this, we continued on and through a very rutted and boggy hole ,fine driving from all who got through and i do know our pilot had very stiff arms the next day ,just before the dinner stop as we traveled on through the quary and woodland part we past the remains of a derilict halftrack which looks like it`s been laid to rest many years ago, again the convoy stopped ,on this section there is a big bomb hole area and the route takes you down and up a very steep bank, trouble ahead the tanks with flat rubber track pads had trouble getting up the other side ,so a german stug (i think please correct if i`m wrong ) with the metal lugged tracks spearheaded us through ,Warwick Bolton in his m20 made a fine six attempt charge (he`ll say it was less than six) on the said hill and mastered it much to the pleasure of the local inhabitants who cheered wildly. dinner stop in the windy field was uneventfull with the highlight been two MOD ration packs taken along and a consignment of belgium beer for none drivers in our vehicle ,breath tests being taken before and after the run on the drivers so t-total for them , with the odd spit -spot of rain which just held off we made a steady snake through the outlying village and back into the center of MONS ,barriers had been put up on the curbsides and the crowds had turned out inspite of threating showers ,a grand parkup in the center of MONS was a fantastic site with wall to wall armour .rows of tanks both British and US , and right infront of the townhall the Copeland brothers dragon wagon center stage, i`m sure many of the hmvf readers will have seen this monumental restoration just think of the fuel consumption on all this heavy metal ,a short shower saw the crowds leave and an early return to the vehicles for loading and return to home ,all in all a great weekend well run and very social ,fine food great belgium beer and a warm welcome from locals and other entrants , MORE NEWS TO FOLLOW FROM YOUR EUROPEAN EVENTS INDEPENDENT REPORTER/ DUCKER AND DIVER JONNY LOOT
  15. the type shown are butler headlights but as litchy says tractor ones ,the differance is were the wires come out ,ww2 jeep butlers the wire comes out of the side ,this is so the wires don`t rub on the bonnet when it`s closed ,there are also a slim type butler light much the same as the ones in the photo ,the glasses on butler and lucus light are seperate to the backing and are fitted with a gasket and retaining clips ,repro are obtainable or it`s a hunt for an original pair top tip don`t try putting h4 modern units in the shells they don`t fit ,they are very close but they get stuck in the rim jonny loot

  23. Jonny Loot here reporting in for the Yorkshire Boys (plus two escaped Lancastrians) (the Tills). After traveling over on the Hull/ Rotterdam ferry our party of 8 jeeps + some of the Manchester boys we made a steady journey to the rally start and hotel, come on you don`t think we were daft enough to sleep in tents! Houffalize was the jump off point saturday morning. In 1944 this was held by the German SS and the Americans had a right ding dong routing them out. After a late night testing the Belgian beer with a few of the locals " hands across the water" and all that Saturdays route was 65km of snow covered tracks and roads through stunning countryside, I`ve taken part in the winter rally for the last 8 or 9 years and it just gets better. The Belgians sure know how to run an event with every road juction marked with arrows and a road book supplied, no pressure to be anywhere on time, it`s a case of drive ,chill and enjoy. We had a slow morning run as the larger vehicles suffered from wheel spin in the snow and ice but with bulldog sprit we all took to pushing "ever pushed an autocar out of a ditch?". All this added to the enjoyment, our dinner time stop was La Roche. This is a small town located in a deep gorge with a river running through, it was a late dinner at 3 oclock due to hold ups. La Roche realy took a pounding in 1944 when it was heavily bombed by the Americans in a plan to route out the Germans. There are some great pictures in the museum there and the guy who owns it is always very helpfull in answering any questions, it's worth a vist if you're in that part of the world. Saturday night is party night, after a warm up in the swimming pool and a sauna and all being very reserved we popped down to the disco and night club where our Belgian hosts had live entertainment, "a right good night " as they say in this part of the world. Sunday was a shorter run out with just the morning route, at this point I must note that it`s still snowing and the drifts across some of the farm tracks are jeep bonnet height! Our small breakaway group stopped out, not returning for the dinnertime meal at the hotel as we wanted to get in as much jeep mileage as we could, we spent the afternoon on near impassable lanes, at one point we had to A- bar two jeeps together for 8 wheel drive up one snow covered track. Sunday night was an early one as we traveled to Luxembourg to the museum at Diekirch, again worth a vist. Sadly two or three of the rooms where closed for central heating being fitted but the rest was excellant, again off on the road and up into the Netherlands for our overnight stop at Overloon to the Marshall museum which is now housed in the Liberty park. This holds one of the best collections of vehicles outside the US and a must for military vehicle enthusiasts, it is all kept in a massive heated building with large dioramas, wide walkways and fantastic exibits. If you look it up on the web the information is not upto the overwelming display of machines from early war right through the 50`s and into the 80`s and 1990`s. Our goup then had to say goodbye the foreign lands and return to old blighty and the real world! Over the years I`ve learned that events are made by people and people make the event and for one I can say that the Belgium Military Vehicle Trust are some of the most welcoming people you`ll find. WELL DONE BMVT and THANK YOU to all the organizers and participents ..............ps if you've got military vehicles, don't park it up for the winter get out there and use it!
