  1. I can understand, I was seriously looking at how hard it would be to remove the cab if I had to do this again. To pull the axle would be a big job on this as the brake plumbing for the three systems would all have to come out, As well as the radiator etc etc... Still, gave me a chance to sort a few things out and have a good clean. :undecided: Iain
  2. A couple of pics of the engine going in. The EB handled it OK only problem was getting the angles just right when pulling in the last few inches, not to mention all the damn bits that want to get in the way. Anyway with the use of jacks under the G,box and rear of the engine not to mention a come-along and some ratchet straps, we got there.. With any luck it's not coming out again for a long long time ! Cheers Iain
  3. Hmmm. Thanks Richard. The engine I am fitting is an NOS/overhauled unit complete with ancilleries and other than the fuel lines to the lift pump and injector pump the only other fitting is the fill level hole. I looked at my other Milly and robbed the banjo fitting from the level hole on it but it did not have a pipe on it and there is no evidence it had one. I'll brave the rust and have a better look at the other Milly in case I misssed something. What is convincing me is the statement in the manual to add oil until it comes out the overfill pipe. What confuses to an extent is that the Bosch pump was plumbed into the engine, oil but mods had been carried out for this.:nut: Cheers Iain
  4. Thanks Jules I am not sure but it looks like the governor end is plumbed into the engine oil system. The Milly CAV pump is isolated and is topped up separately for the main body and the governor with normal engine oil and the manual states to fill until oil comes out the level overflow pipe. I can only assume that the banjo fitting is the spill pipe and is correct as is ?? I have now fitted the engine after a long effort on Saturday, it took 4 hours for the final few inches....... Ill post pics tomorrow. Cheers Iain
  5. That makes sense, you can see the engine with pump on #20 it still has the plastic plug painted over. Cheers Iain
  6. Hopefully I should be fitting the engine this weekend after a few false starts. I'll post some pics. I am unsure about the fuel injection pump. The oil level hole had a plastic plug waiting for a fitting on installation. As it was a completely different Bosch pump that came off my only reference is the pump on spares Milly and this has a banjo fitting but it is just the union with no pipe attached and so the void is open to atmosphere. How should this be ? Is this just left open which seems wrong as oil would just splash out or should it be plumbed into somewhere or even plugged? I cannot tell by looking at parts books or manuals..... Many thanks Iain
  7. You would be entering into a contract and not to comply would usually means financial penalty, as you would be paying to enter how could a penalty be imposed? To lock you in would surely be illegal, as soon as you ask to leave they would have to let you! (I would like to see the barrier that will keep this lot in against their will!). In the end if arguments entail about leaving or whatever, the working relationship is over and it makes no sense to keep an unhappy camper in the public eye. It makes no bussines sense to alienate your main assets..... All very strange.......:undecided:
  8. Hi Iain I found the engine at a company that had loads of them and put them and sheds loads of other kit up for auction, I ended up with some at a very reasonable cost.... They are Winchester Marine, I think they still have some more! Worth a call. Winchester Marine Ltd The Old Grainstores Manby Middlegate Manby Louth Linconshire LN11 8UT tel. 01507 327100 I did put the heads back on as they support the lift point, it uses two of the head studs. The new(recon) is in a stand that should be OK to run in, I would like to give it a go. Meanwhile I'll spend some time sorting out the cab and engine bay. Iain
  9. Update time! I pulled the engine, eventually, after removing loads of plumbing etc etc I used one fork on the EB with an extension and it worked a treat with no sign of the rear lifting. Happy days. So time to swap bits etc Before I get around to fitting the new engine I am going to spend a bit of time in the engine bay cleaning, painting and servicing all those hard to get at parts such as the handbrake and clutch. Still loads of plumbing in there... While I'm at it the cab will get done, its mostly stripped anyway. The clutch looked unworn but the bearing is a bit noisey no doubt due to the greasing hose being split so I am after a new one if anyone can help ? More later Iain
  10. Thanks Iain There are no mod plates on the recon engines but I am assured that this would/should have been done.... It all seemed good and oil free when I pulled the old engine out other than grease from the bearing hose that had split. Iain
  11. Not a comment on Nick but a reflection on how things can go wrong.A few years ago I took a Chieftain (11FD67) to a charity event at Inchmarlo near Aberdeen. After the event I was loading it onto a low loader up hill in a narrow tree lined lane when, 1. A constable standing watching got me to stop as the bike belonging to a young lad had caught the tracks at the rear and had been chewed up and thrown in the air. 2. As I went up the ramps more shouting. Some little scamp had opened a fuel cap and lowered the armour cover, the tanks were full And it was poring over the road. The event organisers sorted it out for me. 3. Nearly on and I lost the power brakes. Going uphill in a narrow lane with onlookers around, cetrafrugal clutch and if I remember right 14 tugs on the handbrake to hold it. I lost some years off my life then and smacked the back of a 432 that was already on there. It Was a few years ago and for charity mind. The young lad was not too bothered and cheered up after a run in a Hummve. This same lad earlier in the day had been standing around a field watching as we did rides in a 432 for a couple of pounds. Other lads not connected with him asked why he did not take a ride, he had no money. So they gave him the cash to get a ride. Really shows the "Yoof" of today in a better light than the often get, really heart warming. Iain
  12. I know what you mean ! I don't want to do this again for a very long time. Do you know how to check for this mod? Is it obvious externally? Iain
  13. Hi Iain I had tucked away a couple of engine gasket sets as they popped up on EBay,it would be good to find a source as I will be using bits from the sets. I am not sure what the cause is for sure but I am suspicious of the turbo conversion, I have not had a good look at the rest of the liners etc yet. It is partly why I am changing the engine as I don't want to find any more problems later. It is a shame as the engine ran really nicely and showed no signs of a problem and the coolent was clean etc. I am looking forward to checking out the performance but don't expect it to be very different, although with a complete set of engine panels it should be significantly quieter and more comfortable, all relative. :-) I am on the lookout for a new clutch as it makes sense to stick a new one in while I have the chance. Iain
  14. It is a 760 with TL12 heads and injection system. So I have a kit of parts to turbo a 760. Problem with that in the Milly is that the turbo sticks into the passenger seat space and was noisey and hot etc. I just want the truck to be back to original spec with the passenger seat fitted and full engine cover panels. Iain
  15. I did the same job a couple of years ago on the gravel at my last house, made the mistake of letting a wheel lay down flat.I could not move it at all even with a great big lever! I needed to use the crane in the end.:red: It is the best way to get to know the vehicle. (Trying to be positive). Iain
  16. Is there someone who overhauls these engines? later when I get time I will look at sorting out the old engine if pos but I would need at least one new liner for this engine and possibly two more for another recon engine that suffered water damage in storage. Cheers Iain
  17. It is a bit of a challenge, I can experiment with the replacement engine to get it right hopefully... I have had two engines in a stillage on the forks before and it handled it OK. It will be different reaching in to the compartment and lifting it in and out but I am fairly confident, ish. Ill take picks pics of course. Cheers Iain
  18. Engine change ! Here goes, it comes out the front, so the bumper, radiator etc have to come off. Everything is big and damn heavy and hurts.... but I am getting there. All fingers and other bits still intact, so far. Until my more expert (ex REME) help is available, time to prep and paint the replacement. Should keep me out of trouble for a while. Iain
  19. Well I finaly got around to it with some help and a push. I got stuck in removing the turbo and injection system, I also removed the various oil feeds for the fuel pump etc and spent a day prepping the replacment heads and pump etc. Then it was time to lift the TL12 heads off, Looking good untill I checked the bores, the upper half inch of cylinder 5 liner is detached and knackerd !:mad: I have given it some thought and rather than risk more diappointment by replacing the liner in-situ and finding other problems later, engine change time. Happy days Iain
  20. The V5 turned up yesterday 10 days after posting the application! Not too bad at all.
  21. Perfect ! Many thanks Iain. In the post tomorrow, I wonder how long it will take all going well....
  22. Hi I am filling in the V55/5 for my Snatch LR and using past posts etc I am just about there. I am stumped a bit with the type approval. I cannot find a type approval number on the vehicle or anywhere else for Q 11 and if this is not filled in it refers you to Q 50 for a statement why it is exempt. I would think that the Defender 110 whould have type approval or should I state that it is ex military with a F654 ??:undecided: Iain
  23. A few years ago I was running a military vehicle driving experience company in Aberdeenshire, one day a police officer turned up for a look around. He was originaly from Northern Ireland and had been in the RUC. He had a big smile for the Ferrets as he told me about one that went missing in the late 70s or early 80s ish. Anyway, apparently the crew had legged it and left it I suppose to an uruly crowd and it dissapeared and has never been seen since. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Or is it a story like the one about "the old empty barn". :undecided: Cheers Iain
  24. I went to FJ and got sorted. The Landy has now passed it's MOT with no advisories. Time to sell I suppose, meanwhile the curtain is to be repaired as the zips need re-stitching, airconditioning to be tested and filled if OK........ Happy days. Iain I am based in Aberdeenshire near Macduff.
