  1. we had an lmd at kiwi barracks bulford, nobody knew a bloody thing about it and it very rarely ventured out onto the plain and when it did it was soon back in the wksp VOR, i remember someone telling me the design dated back to 1928 that might have been an exaggeration but it certainly looked old enough rick
  2. i heard of a similar story not so long ago, apparently a fella was going to build a ferret in a tent :-D i even heard of one idiot who was going to build a churchill in his shed rick
  3. there's plenty of boxes about for under £100 but you won't find a carrier box with the correct gear selector housing, (instead of a gear stick it has a stubby splined shaft that the linkage attatches too), this is easily rectified on a normal selector by cutting the stick down and using a grub screw to secure it in the right position. you will also need the dished flange that goes on the back of the box and butts upto the axle ( about £100 to have it made )also the straight spur gear that goes between the g/box output shaft and the diff input pinion, you can get these nos from dirk leegwater for £30. however having said all that i've just remembered a guy in the states that might have one for sale if you don't mind paying the shipping. send me a pm if you want his details. dirk's site http://www.lwdparts.com also try this bren carrier site www.mapleleafup.net rick ps i'm in the process of restoring my own t16 if you need anything give me a shout
  4. you're more than welcome to come and have a look at my cromwell but the tracks are 15.5" wide and it would mean a trip to wigan but the offers there if you fancy a drive out. rick
  5. good for you tom, quite a little collection you're building there
  6. the guys have been working on the tillers/master cylinders and the spark has been too busy to get the wiring sorted due to other commitments but it's certainly in the pipeline soon, i know i keep saying that but it's getting there ! rick
  7. that's right it's fitted with the 15.5" track and not the earlier 14" or the comets 18". hopefully they will be turning soon :-D
  8. it's a queer looking thing, (the carden loyd not the bloke dressed as monty). i look forward to seeing it up close, hopefully looking down on it from the commanders hatch of my cromwell :cool2: rick
  9. from what i can gather listening in to other carrier owners who've re rubbered wheels £250 a piece seems to be the norm but there is another solution, you could leave the original rubber on and turn it down on the lathe to the correct dimension or until the scabby bits were gone, that is assuming there's enough rubber left on the wheel. rick
  10. i'd go for the abbot, it's a better investment and spares are easy to come by. rick ps. or you could go to france and buy a sherman variant from the chap in bordeaux
  11. few unusual churchill pics. not sure what it was called but the first pic shows a tracked recovery trailer with churchill on being pulled through the mud by another churchill. it says a lot about the strength of the transmission to be able to move a load like that :wow:
  12. hi geoff glad you like the pic, i'm not sure what these sleds were called so i thought i'd put them on your sled thread. i don't know who thought of putting men into sleds but it's a bloody awful idea, i can see why they never caught on. rick
  13. not the best way to go to war but it beats walking
  14. bob is correct, it won't be running next week. it will be running the week after that !!!
  15. nice weasel, have you seen the lee/grant for sale on milweb :cool2:
  16. my cromwell would look great on the back of a scammell but complete trmu's are not common infact i know of only one, although the good news is it's not far from me in yorkshire. maybe one day he'll let me borrow it rick
  17. a few were for sale a year or so ago on milweb for a very reasonable £10k.
  18. where's adrian when you need him !
  19. reckon you'd be looking at £125k and upwards for a restored stuart
  20. thanks for the info david, i hadn't realised that some gun tanks didn't have besa's fitted in the hull. it was that and the early type hull with both hatches on top that made me think cavalier. there's a part of me that wants to have a go at getting it out but to be honest i've more than enough rusty armour to keep me busy for a while ! rick
  21. here's what i think is a cavalier op tank sitting on a beach in wales. the story goes that it was on a d day landing exercise and hit a patch of quicksand and the decision was made to strip it and leave it where it was and it has sat under the sand until recently. if anyone wants to have a closer look it's on morfa beach near port talbot. (don't forget your bucket and spade).
