1. I wouldn't be suprised if it is a pre-organized publicity stunt as this so called story was even in the Australian news. We had these guys breach APEC security
2. As some of the posts have touched on, I believe the main reason for a restoration is because the individual wants to do it or wants that particuliar vehicle. Some do it because it's cheaper to buy a wreck than a restored one. Money helps of course but dedication and enjoying a challenge is more of requirement as we have seen 10 year restoration projects. I marvel at what people do if they want to do it. I seen a website where a guy rebuilt a Willy's and what he started with was barely recognisable as a jeep. Paitience is a big factor i.e. when that bolt don't come out it is not always necessary to bring out the liquid socket set. I have rebuilt a Lightweight and now am involved in rebuilding a few Pinzgauers but I like myself to Grasshoppers comment " "pre-stripped" project. Its more a case of repainting a lot of parts and bolting it back together. I also have most of the bits. Others have undertaken far more difficult restorations (ie Adrian and Jims' Shermans rebuilt from range wrecks)". My hat goes off to the guys who can rebuild something from nothing
3. The dose rates are based on lowering exposure risk. For example 25 micro Sievert is a radiation workers allowable dose rate per hour and a lot of people think if under that limit ok. However the idea as I said is to lower the risk as 1 photon could cause the somatic or genetic mutation or simply give you cancer. So the idea of limits is same as if I throw 25 tennis balls at a person, I got a 1 in 25 chance of hitting them. If I have 100 you got better odds. Another item is distance if the person is closer better odds. All kind of interesting for me as when doing radiation work we would put up big signs, with "Radiation Work in Progress - Keep Out" and people would near on fall over stepping accross them to come into the area. Another time there was only one access so we put a sign at the entrance and feeling a bit humourous we taped it up with radiation tape, looking something like a crime scence door ie a lot of tape. Later we are doing a shot and this guy wanders in. We asked him how he got in, and he said the gate. We said how and he said, took ages to get in as some twit had taped the gate up :banghead:
4. we used to call it 100 mph tape as reputely it could stay on at 100mph I believe it was called 100mph tape as thats how fast it disappeared out the store
5. And that was today.... Going in tomorrow morning to crimp the battery leas lugs as I left my new tool at home. Been trying to find a second hand crimper for ages with no luck as they are quite pricey. I found this gadget on Ebay at a fraction of the cost so we see how good it is tomorrow. 6. Figured out I had the winch on back to front :red: Fix that, bought 12m of battery cable and started routing the winch control wiring
7. Found some more areas requiring repair :undecided:
8. Well, got the radiator tunnel repair done, so am feeling a bit more at ease as moving forwards.
9. G'Day Welcome (Dobro pojalovati) russian could be useful for the guys that own BMP, Gaz etc
10. I heard a story from a gent over here who was involved in the, from memory Thai Scorpion mods. Apparently the recoil wasn't assessed correctly and the wheels were snapping off
11. yep, although it was apparent I is an Aussie, it gave them months of laughs about it and although I was buying kit from them I was the butt of all jokes for a few hours. Nice blokes though. Andy, so whats the plans on your new toy, any rebuild/s, modifications, should we be expecting a GAZ thread? Can we get some more piccies, whats it handle like?
12. Thats description fits, as the inside is spotless as the moulded inserts would have protected the inside. Has got a date on it, thinking 1972, but would have to check as it is at the yard full of car parts (the expensive bits).
13. The 'Shire' quip is a bit humourous as we went down to buy some bits and I explained we had driven from Cambrdge, to Nottinghamshire down to Glouscestershire and were going back the same day. I pronounced 'shire' (well how its spelt :red: ) or the locals described it more along the lines "you been watching to much of Lord of the Rings you daft Aussie prat". Nice part of UK, have to get back there, soon. I forgot to say welcome before :-D
14. I know an Andy in the 'shire' who was/is mad on Land Rovers Is it a common problem?
15. Actually a bigger problem than that. Most common problem is radiation flow gauges in process plant get melted down as part of the scrap as people forget about them, not good as typically they use Cobolt 60. Two incidents I am aware of is an apartment building in Taiwan with the rebar so hot people cant live there. The other incident was at a nuke plant in the states. They have sensors at the gates to prevent exit of radioactive materials. A load of new steel was comming in and the alarms started screaming.
16. I have to admit, it does kind of bother me as I am a do it, decide now type person. So having to take an extra step and negotiate a price is a waste of my time. Bit like Ebay sometimes a buy it now is the option instead of waiting. I'm on a rant now... also on POA people want you to call them.... wtf for? Don't they have any friends or neighbours they can talk to? Thankyou Robin, very theraprutic
17. I guess if your really drunk you don't feel that sick anymore until the next day
18. most likely cheap to buy :-D Mind you if they were washed down, they would be ok. The radiation don't get into the metal like what was posted in the other forum. What the problem is radioactive contamination, particles, dust etc which could have got into every nook and cranny. So if it was thouroughly jetblasted.... but you can imagine the water coming out with particles, then wash it again. So it's cheaper at the moment to let them sit, but one day they will have to clean it up as it aint going to go away
19. Not sure if this has been linked in here before. http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1682155
20. Part of my trade is weld inspection (senior welding inspector) which is odd, but quite humorous when I say to a welder "I can't weld but would do a better job". On that topic, undercut is very bad and don't believe the welder when he says it's just a little bit. My last job was working for TWI (The Welding Institute) they got some fancy gear and I was based at a welding school here in Malaysia. But never had time or more correctly I was a bit of a workaholic so never made time. Rebuilding a car, keeps me from working all weekend so I try to just do 9 to 5 now.
21. Well decided to take the radiator of the other one and have a look :wow: But after a wire buff and closer inspection it is quite solid :yay:. A few pin holes and pen holes but all in one spot so easier to fix and make pretty (I need a dremel tool). I hate rust repairs as I can't weld and have to wait on others for this type of work. Painted half of it in the excitement. Also fitted the winch solenoid, completely under the dash. Now I just have to save up to buy several metres of copper cable. Maybe get to do some work next saturday, then off to Germany for a week and a half.
22. Anyone know, what, where etc this first aid box comes from. Thinking thats a nice neat little box 'I'll buy that on Ebay', then I found out it's quite huge, larger than a briefcase. Lucky a friend was travelling over this way:) I just bought another complete first aid kit so the collection of Sh#@ continues
