  1. Picture paints a thousand words etc. Top tip. Never ever straddle, stand next to, learn over or hold onto a winch rope/tow rope when a recovery task is being carried out. Something went wrong...
  2. Don't think he'll be working for Cosrec anytime soon:cool2::cool2:
  3. They are all over youtube and many other Military related websites.
  4. Agree with that, far to much damage occurs when drivers think they are helping by revving the hell out of the stuck vehicle and spinning the wheels.
  5. Nice video, takes me back to my courses at Bordon, lucky that Cent was there.
  6. Placing a log under the winch rope on the brow of the bank would help in keeping the rope up increasing the angle of pull and more importantly preventing the rope from cutting into the bank were it could possibly become damaged dragging over sharp stones and rocks.
  7. Nice work by the French, that took some doing to get that stuck there. Big crane to get that out me thinks.
  8. It's coming on well looking forward to the end result.
  9. Definately a bit of prior digging around the axles and wheels to reduce the resistance would've prevented any damage, all that power pulling from the one recovery eye was asking for something to give.
  10. A very strange looking Chieftain edited to add, trying to post a video of it but not working. Here's the link.
  11. I'm no Armourer or expert (other than pulling the trigger and enjoying the bang) but isn't the US 5.56 a slightly different size? as in length of round so will have diferent characteristics. Just something I over heard our Armourers talking about.
  12. We disconnect the radio batteries on quite a few of our in service vehicles with no problems at all, if we leave them connected they eventually discharge to an extent they become knackered and we end up demanding new ones.
  13. They're actually wear indicators, you will obviously know that the sprockets can be turned to increase the life, that's the reason for the two punch marks. As an added bonus they can also be used as a quick visual reference to check you have both sprockets lined up. Robin, you don't need a gauge just a visual inspection, if there is a gauge I've never seen one and I've been 1st line all my career, that said I'll check when I'm back in work after Xmas leave.
  14. Maybe I should buy myself a couple of land rovers when I get out of the Army, this sounds like money for nothing if people are willing to part with this sort of cash for a bit of offloading.
  15. But not really an issue with well disciplined professional soldiers such as the British Army. The rate of fire in a young relatively inexperienced soldier will be controlled in a fire fight by the section commander and/or his 2nd.
  16. Yes Mr Walker, brilliant bloke, really nice guy not sure what he's up to these day's.
  17. Nah not having it mate, nearly 6 grand for a bit of driving in the sand for a couple of weeks, not to mention the mandatory 2 days off road training at £100 per day, then flights possible hotel at the airport either side of the trip, take into account spends and cost of equipment/clothing you might have to buy before you go then I reckon you're not getting much change out of 7 to 7 1/2 grand. Don't get me wrong I think it'd be awesome to do as they're doing and I'd love to do it but I think I'll stick with HMG getting me to drive around the deserts of Afghan and paying me good money to do so (even though a bit more dangerous). Not knocking it, the expedition is a cracking idea but at that cost.... jeeees:shocked:
  18. It's actually called a "tool recovery mechanic" or tool recy mech, as radiomike7 say's it's used to drag all manner of recovery equipment about saving your hands and fingers getting crushed etc. It's especially usefull for repositioning winch ropes etc. These very useful tools are issued as part of CES to all recovery vehicles including armoured recovery vehicles and have been for many years, you are usually issued 3 per wagon.
  19. Have a look here, everything explained. http://www.lincsaviation.co.uk/lancaster-taxy-rides/ For the extra £70 I think I'd go for the ViP experience as you get the whole day there.
  20. Sounds fantastic, I'd love to do that but.... £5750 NOT including flights to and from Egypt. Wow
  21. We had 2 slidebacks when I was posted to Cyprus, one with a bed that length would've been much more useful.
  22. Like it, what's the max weight you can put on the bed?
  23. I've spent quite a bit of time on the A7 which runs from Hamburg all the way down to Bavaria recently, yes when the snows falling it can get down to 1 lane traffic naturally but once it's stopped the snow plows/gritters usually get the 2nd/3rd lane open, but it's been a while since I've seen traffic at a standstill, I think the key word here is slow going but moving;)
