  1. Hi Tim Welcome to the forum! I also have a 58 ferret. Can we see some pics of yours? :-)
  2. Welcome in dude! Bit quiet in Gatwick I reckon these days :-)
  3. Chris You might already know this but the wheel nuts on the Left hand Side are a Left Hand Thread. RH Thread on the RH side. Simple :-) DO NOT REMOVE the smaller nuts on the wheel which hold the wheel split rims together. These nuts are usually painted RED to indicate DANGER. The wheel nuts are the larger of the two types of nuts, and there are less of them.
  4. Good luck Chris! Keep us posted!
  5. I'm hearing you on FM! I couldn't get the spare splinter screen in withour taking the holder off either! :-) I've got 3 spare screens and they are all rather tight in the holder, so I took the most narrow one and forced it into the holder when it was removed! I thought someone must have lined the holder with too much felt, as there was NO Way that screen was going in without the holder being off the vehicle! common fault? or were they never used anyway?
  6. That looks good Chris, nice larkspur kit :-) And yes, chris is spot on (as your would expect :-) The big green box is the Clansman TUAAM Box. It's a big bugger and slightly interferes with driving :-) and exiting via the drivers hatch. That mallet is for emergency use only :-) More Pics Below.
  7. Hi Arran Welcome to the forum matey I would appreciate it if you could post or PM me the Mil Reg and hull number of your ferret if you know it? as I'm trying to compile a register Cheers Matt
  8. Yes, I've also just fitted 2 black thermos' into the ferret. Bloody difficult to get them closed without crushing or scratching the flask. One of them won't hold closed and I've had to "termporarily" use a cable tie :undecided: That spare splinter screen was a bit tight too! Does anyone know exactly how many sterling mags were carried, don't know whether to cram in 10, or use 8?
  9. That is impressive Just been out in mine, smiles all round, shes running well. All set for Wheels and Wings next month :-) Are any other fellow ferret owners going?
  10. I think originally specified to withstand .30-06 and .303 However during production the armour thinkness was increased to withstand more. My ferret has been uparmoured during it's service life, by adding extra applique armour to the hull and turret. maybe to withstand .303 armour piercing?? (The pigs and saracens were very heavily uparmoured during service, I think to withstand .303 AP) I'm sure Clive knows more details. Matt
  11. Hi Brad I see another ferret owner Can you post an introduction on the welcome page. Cheers Matt
  12. Ok Clive Thanks for getting back to me. I was getting exceited there for a moment. Cheers Matt
  13. Hi Guys My ferret also must have been struck off before 1987, as it was privately owned from 1987 onwards. Clive, do you have catalogues, from withams or whoever else which would show ferrets up for sale before 1987? If you do I would be very interested. Cheers Matt
  14. Hi Robin Whats your other ferret, I recall you saying earlier that a hull number of one of the two was 447.8.8.4? Regards Matt
  15. Thanks Andy and i appreciate all the help you have given me too! I'm getting there slowly but surely (more slowly though!) Maybe at a later date we could add hull numbers onto your website. If that Alvis employee would like to speak up there would be plenty of pints coming his way
  16. Hi Guys I've been trying to compile a "ferret register" over the last few years including corresponding hull numbers when I can get hold of them. I would appreciate as much info as anyone can provide. I'm currently trying to piece together information from the old ferret heaven register and all other sites, including HMVF :-) and of course from ferret owners. I have no info on 32BA79, apart from the hull number from the old ferret heaven site. Cheers Matt
  17. Yes, mine had a broken corner on each. I've had given them to a friend of a friend to weld them up and still waiting to get them back. After waiting 3 weeks I decided to buy new. I'm glad I did now, it's been about 6 weeks since I gave them to the other chap :-(
  18. By the way, the black paint on that upper pipe burnt off after 5 miles :-) It's now looking white!
  19. Looking forward to hearing about the saracen Those pipes and elbows are all NOS. Even though they are "as new", the pipes still slide in the mounts when cold. It is much better now though. Matt
  20. Hello Chris, and Andy Yes, I have used 2 nuts in the elbow mounts too (as shown) Looks good Chris. Mine is running ok, although I havent really tested it yet, hoping to go out on a longer run this week. As John said earlier, I've now moved the blowing from the minifold to the tubes - at least its "as designed" :-) Matt

    Originality

    I feel physically sick!
  22. Great Info on ROC posts. Plenty appearing on lately Ebay too! I do fancy rescuing one before they all become damaged and destroyed by idiots! My friends did always say i have a "bunker mentality" :cool2:
  23. Mine are also quite cracked, not on the sidewall but on the tread. However I do run on them but keep a regular check of the cracks. As the actual tread is inches deep and that an inner tube is used, plus a run flat insert I am assuming it it ok to run on them :undecided: Please tell me if anyone thinks otherwise :-) I've also measured the circumference and matched the sides to within half an inch (lucky :-)
  24. Hello Chris I found that on a few tappets I needed to push them down to make sure they were at rock bottom before I checked with the feeler gauge. I don't have the spanners to hand because the ferret isn't at stored at my own house, but from memory I think it was 9/16th to hold the tappet. 1/2 to unlock/lock the locking nut and 7/16th to actually adjust the tappet. I found that keeping the locking nut relatively tight allowed more "feel" when turning the tappet top nut. make sure you keep the actual tappet held with the 9/16th spanner while you try to adjust, or else the whole tappet will turn. I think as was said earlier there would have been a special tool for this as the 9/16th spanner is a little loose. Regarding the spark plugs, I too couldn't find a torque figure for this, so you will have to use judgement. It's a cast iron head so there should be less worry about stripping the threads by overtightening than in an alloy head. However there is really no need to overtighten. Cheers Matt
