  1. I removed the RH cover plate this afternoon to complete the inspection. Cylinders 4 and 5 looking good....Just Cyl 6 to check... Bit tight to get the feeler gauge in here..... b*gger! Clearance on cylinder 6 is Tight! In fact it's only about 6 thou! About 2 hours later I can see why it's tight. To say it's a fiddly job is an understatement. I think the first 5 must have been set by the previous owner because they are almost bang on, but then they probably gave up on setting the last one! Anyway, after I realised that I couldn't really hold 3 spanners in one hand and a mirror in the other whilst stood on a tool box, I wedged the mirror against the fuel tank and the block and that allowed me to get a proper grip on the spanners. 20 mins later it's now bang on 0.015" :-D All done :-) Chris, i would say it's definately worth checking them as you have the manifold off. I would hate to need to adjust them with the exhaust manifolds in place! My cork gaskets do need replacing though as they both fell apart as the covers were removed.
  2. Hi Chris I removed one of the covers today and checked the clearance on the Cyls 1, 2 and 3. (I was a bit limited on time, will complete tomorrow all being well) Unfortunately my starting handle is no use because the Boss on the crank is damaged. So I removed the spark plugs, which allowed me to turn the engine using fan easily while looking into a mirror. (at the tappets, not just for my own vanity :-) The clearance on all the first 3 appeared to be 0.015" - 0.017", so I don't think I need to touch the adjustment on these. On cyls 2 and 3, the tappet rotated as the valve closed - I was wondering if this was something to do with the "exhaust valve rotator" shown on your Tappet diagram on Chris' first post on this thread? I might be way of the mark here, but thought I would query, as I can see that the clearance is larger (0.025") for engines with exhaust valve rotators in the manual data list. Cheers Matt
  3. Hi guys I've been checking my exhaust tappets today on the ferret and have taken note of the Engine Number plate. I was surprised to see that my B60 is in fact a Mk 6A/L According to Pats RR B Series engine book, that engine was fitted to 'Vigilant' AFV. What does the 6A/L signify over the standard Mk 6A? And would it be a standard fit into my ferret? Cheers Matt
  4. Thanks Clive That is great information! I shall take a print out for reference :-)
  5. Thanks Clive :-) Out of interest, whats the difference between the RSN8 and the 12Y? Cheers Matt
  6. Hi Guys I can see that Champion RSN12Y plugs are commonly used as a replacements for the B60 original RSN13P's. (in Ignition Matters of course :-D ) But would Champion RSN8 also make a suitable replacement? Cheers Matt
  7. That is a Bargain! I might be speaking to you in the future about a joint order :-D
  8. A very warm welcome from a fellow ferret owner :-D
  9. Not so cheap but this is what I use. Morris Golden Film SAE 30 http://www.morrislubricantsonline.co.uk/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=165&product=Golden+Film+SAE+30+Classic+Motor+Oil And this, which is good value and should be an exact match. LOE Lodexol 80W/90 API GL4 Gear Oil - £11.88 * LOE 005 - 5 Ltr http://www.morrislubricantsonline.co.uk/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=61&product=Lodexol+80W%2F90+API+GL4+Gear+Oil
  10. 2 cylinders from banisters, 2 still to be received.
  11. Well done mate. Good job done! I'm overhauling the brakes on mine now. 4 new cylinders! it should stop on a dime! .....It better do! :-D
  12. I bet they were hard pressed to find a Box of Kynoch .455 to get that webley up and running! :-) I also bet that bolt action pistol kicks like a mule! :-D
  13. Hi Chris The faces on the other parts seem to be ok, so I'm going to leave them as they are. The 2 single elbows have both got a corner broken off, so i have got them in for cast welding. The double elbow seems to be ok, but the silencer is bad. All the baffles are rusted out, so that is in for a rebuild at the moment too! It's a slow process, but in the mean time I am overhauling the front braking system and fitting 2 new wheel cylinders. Both front cylinders are leaking, and have corroded. So I bought NOS from Banisters a few months ago. I've got a minor bit of commisioning of the clansman installation to do too. I will post some pictures as soon as that is done :-) Matt
  14. My manifolds have been collected and are ready for fitment :-) I'm now wondering if I need to look at the exhaust valve clearances like Chris? Although access to the flywheel is seriously blocked by my new 352/353 clansman installation! :-D
  15. Indeed :-) Warm Welcome to you from Huddersfield :-D
  16. John It seems that those pipes always are an issue. The previous owner of my ferret had wrapped them in some high temp exhaust bandages, held tight by jubilee clips, but this seemed to only be a temporary fix. I have purchased 2 new pipes from banisters, so I'm hoping that the castings themselves are not too worn. My manifold is in for surface grinding at the moment, so fingers crossed I will get it back by midweek. I have recut the stud threads, that was a job, they were so rusted, my right hand and arm are killing me :-) Chris, I managed to get 6 new genuine nuts, which was a good job, because at least 4 or 5 of mine had totally stripped! I'm all ready now to bolt the manifold back up, when i get it back :-D I did see some 5/16 unf brass unf nuts on ebay, however I didn't see any with the same type of collar. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370317127761&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT But I don't know if they will ship to the US? I've been trying to find out what torque the nuts should be, would that be in the B60 manual, or does anyone know the figures offhand? Regarding, the mis-alignment, I was wondering about using 2 thick gaskets on the inner hull side, to try and counter the reduction in manifold width? Cheers Matt
  17. I see you have already changed the autosig :-) is this the bad boy! :-D
  18. Great mate. When do you think you will be taking delivery :-)
  19. Blo*dy Hell! What a Garage! I'm jealous now :-D
  20. Great vid :-) I just wish I could have the opportunity the fire one!
  21. Hello Colin, and welcome to the forum. Fantastic collection! You are very welcome here :-) Cheers Matt
  22. Hello guys Chris, sorry to Hijack your thread but I'm appear to be directly following your progress, albeit 2 days later then you! I finally got the b*st*rds off! :-) That was a tedius job, I've been at it days. Both sides of the manifolds were blowing, and now that they are off i can see why. The manifold face seems to have eroded away in parts. The worst erosion is where the gaskets had blown. A couple of queries. Will I be able to get the faces machined flat? And If I do, will it put the exhaust assembly out of alignment? I know it won't be by much, but will it matter? Secondly, what is the thread size of the studs? I thought it looked to be 5/16 UNF, but the brass nuts don't seem to like it. I think I will need to use a tap and die on the studs and nuts, as the studs are badly corroded, and quite a few of the nuts stripped on removal. How are you getting on Chris? I'm following your lead :-D Cheers Matt
  23. I've ocassionally seen a few pics of ferrets with a screen fitted into guides mounted the (folded down) front hatch. It would keep the wind off the driver, but not restrict the sideward vision like the original screen. Has anyone seen this modification up close? Matt
  24. Fantastic!! If only I had the room.... and the bottle :-D Paul, if you have the room, go for it my friend... :-)
