My Chieftain (faux Abrams) won't shift into 2nd or 3rd gear

Hello folks,

I have a Chieftain Mk10 (converted to look like an M1 Abrams) and it won't shift into 2nd and 3rd gear. Has anybody had this problem before and if so, what was the problem? We have a mechanic coming down sometime next month and he thinks it may be an electrical problem.

Here's a picture of our Chieftain and what I mean it's been converted to look like an M1 Abrams.

Fault is likely to be electical, could be either end but mote likely to be at the connections at the solenoid bank on the gearbox, or actual solenoids stuck. Has it stood for some time without being run ?

Prior to us receiving it last year, it did sit for extended periods of time. We have driven around the property and the RPM's in first gear get me nervous that we are going to cause more damage.

When you say you have a mechanic coming to look at it next month... who is he ? My friend who is a Chieftain specialist will be in Oregon next month continuing the rebuild of the last Chieftain sold from Withams, for the USA owner.

It's definitely not him. I would like to get in communications with him if possible. The mechanic that I have coming by works on all types of armor and heavy equipment but not a specialist with the Chieftains. I would love to have him stop by.

When you say it won't shift into second gear - does the gear indicator move and then return to first gear?

You have a number of options with this one.................

Do you have main brake pressure - if not the brake safety system will stop you changing up to any gear other than first gear.

Also the governor on top the gearbox could be stuck. This in effect will be telling the gearbox not to change up to further gears as the engine is not up to the required RPM.

It could also be the gearbox foot controller playing up - but unlikely.

Failing that - electrical fault at the rear junction box or stuck solenoids but with my basic knowledge I think stuck solenoids is highly unlikely unless water has got into the top electrical box.

Hi yep I would check Solinoids on the gearbox. Having stood for a while the springs can rust and snap. Also as Mark said solinoid sensors another one is the hand break solinoid. It's a shame I'm in Vegas in a couple of weeks for a work convention.

I got VERY ill last night and haven't had a chance to check my email or this forum until now so I apologize for the delayed response.

Thank you everybody for getting us pointed in the right direction!

As for being located behind the Circus Circus, that would be us. I am currently in the middle of opening a second location twenty minutes away where guests can drive the Chieftains, FV432's and HMMWV's but also shot 20mm rifles, flamethrowers, MK-19 GL's as well.

I absolutely LOVE the Chieftain tanks and will probably add few more to the motor pool but bring them back to stock with the proper British markings and flags.

you have a whole contingent of British Army mechanics straight up I-15 in sunny southern Alberta. I wouldn't think it would be hard to convince a few qualified guys to trade some expertise for a little R&R in Vegas. Contact BATUS or failing that, the Museum of the Regiments in Calgary, they will help you get in touch with the boys from Suffield. Word of warning, Vegas May not be ready for the type of excitement a few of these chaps on leave can cause!
