N.O.S. Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 I met someone today who had been to see the Spruce Goose on display at a Disneyland site some years back. I didn't know it still existed. It has since moved to another site - try www.sprucegoose.org/aircraft_artifacts/exhibits.html for the story behind this 8-engined monster of the sea/skies! Just need an excuse to go to Oregon now..... Quote
Jessie The Jeep Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 Not sure about it being at Disneyland, but yes, the Goose moved from its original home in a dome in Long Beach, California, near the Queen Mary. It travelled north to McMinville, Oregon. Its size is beyond comprehension until you see it. We saw it during our Honeymoon in 2000, while they were still building the new display hall. To give you a slight idea of the size, for those who know a little about aeroplanes, each propeller is the size of a Pitts Special wingspan, and the tailplane on the Spruce Goose is about the same span as the wingspan on the Avro Vulcan. An engineer can walk down the inside of the wings to work on the engines in flight! Steve Quote

Steve Steve - yes I should have said that the dome was owned by Disney Corp who wanted it back (as per the article on the website I posted). That bit of info about working on engines in flight is just amazing!!! Tony Quote

Jessie The Jeep Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Here's the 'Goose' on its way north. The trucks pulling the plane give scale to the monster. Steve Quote
ivor Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 The Florida Air museum in Lakeland has a major collection of spruce goose/ Howard Hughes stuff. Looks like he wasn't a very tall fella looking at his gear. Quote
