abn deuce
an old idea that was once the way to power vehicles prior to and during WWII without gas or diesel? or was a small amount needed just to start the engine ? found this reference on wickapedia to give a bit more information on how they worked http://www.powerset.com/explore/semhtml/Wood_gas_generator?query=wood+gas+trucks Edited June 24, 2008 by abn deuce
Tony B
SAAB also did a lot of development on this sytem, I suppose they have a lot of trees? :n00b:
ArtistsRifles
SAAB did a lot of development on a lot of things - not all of which made it into the production models - and sometimes not for the reasons you might expect (i.e. the bean counters). One of their bright ideas was to replace the conventional headlamps with UV ones. As lights they worked really well - no glare from fog or rain, no dazzling on-coming drivers and you could see the white lines on the roads under snow up to 4" deep. The reason the project was dropped - complaints from women about their nether garments being outlined everytime a car equipped with the UV lights drove past......
Poptopshed
I recal a similar system fitted to a S2/3 Landrover. The huge burner was mounted on the rear and prevented the door from opening but otherwise worked well.

Enigma
Wood or gas burners were also used in the Netherlands in WW2. For Gas (like propane or whatever) they had a large inflatable bag in a wooden box on top of the car. Seen a pic in a mag for local history. Tony B
they were used in Jersey as well, except that had a producer unit on the back. I'll try and find the photos.
Corbs
Recently a group of lads in Sweden converted an old Volvo to run on wood gas and went on a road trip: http://www.vedbil.se/indexe.shtml "The car took us 5420 km in 20 days, using 7 square metres of wood.
