on the humber the generator makes an odd whine sound at low rpm which goes away at higher revs....is this normal

Joe yes assuming you have a 2-speed 25A generator. It is the generator gearbox operating. If it has been idle for 3 weeks you need to prime its gearbox with 1/4 pint of engine oil. As it only gets lubricated after a few minutes of running.

This is under the brass filler nut on top of the generator near the pulley. Do not put oil down the mesh hole that is the air intake.

thanks for the info i'll try the priming....will post pics of progress on bedford and humber..... the humber has been fairly easy to maintenance after all floor plates were removed pressure washed brakes etc. and sand blast/ paint.... the bedford required engine rebuild, frame r and r and replacement back to it's original chasis with sandblast and paint...it now looks as it should and is remarkably complete....but certainly not a cheap project... not far from runing the bedford awaiting a carb rebuild..... will post pics of work tonight... joe in albany
