airportable
Only a wild guess. With out a blade, looks like a marlin. Mates make boat fenders and use somthing very much the same. But allways had to reach for a knife as well. Just a thought.

Tony B
I think you'll find it is a Hobday tool. Named after Sir Fredric Hobday MRCVS. The device was used in an operation named after him to cure Roaring or Whistiling in horses. It was also routinley done on cavalary horses, mules and donkeys. An incesion is made in the trachia to open the wind pipe. The spike is then inserted and twisted. The rseult is to destroy the animals vocal chords. The knife standing slightly proud when closed ensurse the spike can be cleanly removed, otherwise the tissue closes and binds. And yes the operation is still used in some cases.
