Land Rover 90 2.5 NA diesel injection pump

robin craig

Question

Gents

Our 90 has a horrible leak or leak at the injection pump ad it is running on about 2 or 3 cylinders at best because of it and making a naughty puddle underneath.

Anyone changed one? Any special tools needed? Anyone got a lead on a replacement unit or maybe even and NOS complete engine with ancilliaries for a fiver?

Comments suggestion welcome, apart from the obvious "fiver" remarks!

R

Is it defiantly the pump leaking or is it a line, i have had several where number 1 injector pipe has been leaking and a swap for a new one has solved the problem, its also alot cheaper than an pump.

If it is,the pump ill have a dig around as i am sure i could find out what tools etc you need for doing it.

You can change a N/A/TD/Tdi pump without disturbing the timing belt but you need the full timing kit to do it. IMHO you may as well change the timing belt anyway and you can do that without any timing tools, just a couple of (I think) 9.5mm drill bits, look on any LR forum and you'll find plenty of posts on how to do it without timing tools inc the easy way to undo the crankshaft pulley bolt.

When you get the pump off, take to an independent diesel specialist (nothing DIY in there) as they will mostly be ex CAV/Bosch, be cheaper and may repair rather than sell you a replacement.

Just don't do what my mate did and forget to take all the drill bits out before trying to start the engine. Many happy hours trying to fish bits of broken drill bits out of the timing case before admitting defeat and stripping it all down again.:nut:
