I take the point Richard that you were drawing a distinction between active IR & passive IE, but it is neither of these. But you are are very good on era, in fact 1957. But this device was conceived as a result of something that happened to the 'thin winged Javelin'. As you might expect there is nothing relevant to be found on wiki about it, I'm afraid.
