  1. What is a Falcon Mike, are you thinking of the CV12 Challenger/Commander engine? AFAIK Falcon was an early V12 aero engine.
  2. I will pass the numbers on to my son who is currently working at Perkins Peteboghorror.
  3. Difficult one Nick, as Clive says it would be nice to keep the existing gear train but you need to weigh up the risk factor in trying to press the shaft out of the old gear and back on again. Whichever way you do it make sure you have a tiny amount of backlash between the gears measured in at least four places.
  4. Here it is again hauling 97 tons of iron ore and grossing 128 tons:
  5. I could argue that you saw neither - REME use recovery vehicles not wreckers:cool2:
  6. I'm struggling with this one, what exactly are we seeing here?
  7. For DIY: http://www.curiouser.co.uk/illusions/dragon/dragon.jpg
  8. I've blown it up, it definetely reads BIG BEN either side of the T.
  9. Was the Antar winch not mechanical and chain driven? Martian recovery had a 2 speed hydraulic winch.
  10. Width for the tractor is 2.59m, trailer is 2.89m with inriggers, 3.47m with outriggers so wider than an LGV and not conforming to C&U regs. They run under STGO cat 3 with civilian drivers. Although the older artic trailers were lower and more stable they suffered from tyre problems and often were followed by a Land Rover to spot overheated or punctured tyres.

  12. Pete, what do you mean by 'air hand brake'? The early contract Explorer should have a Hill Holder (the large lever mounted on the steering column which has a mechanical connection to the foot brake), a transmission drum brake and an air valve to work the trailer brakes. From memory only the later contracts had a Neate cable handbrake in place of the transmission brake, while RAF models had vacuum trailer brakes.
  13. Simon, as I understand it the Foden DROPS as released is an LGV and as such must conform to C&U regs which due to its width it will not. Mount a ballast body on the back and it becomes a locomotive which is currently exempt from plating/testing and C&U regs, although it would then be subject to loco speed restrictions. Why are you having a pop at another member who has put so much time and effort into helping our hobby? Providing that the required notification is given and approved there is no reason why his combination should not be allowed on the road; he would be quite entitled to draw a third trailer if kept within the maximum permissible length.
  14. Well that's cheered me up no end, was it painted in-house or contracted out? Painting them green seems like a waste of money unless they have a potential military buyer lined up.
  15. I am fascinated by the order in which you have carried out this work, first you ignore the timing marks and set the timing by trial and error and then you decide to service the points which will alter the timing. There is also another vital component known as a condensor which is well worth checking on these distributors but hey, perhaps leave that for another day.
  16. Not quite the same but your post reminded me of this incident. I suspect they wound the brakes off while it was on its side and then had a spot of brain fade.
  17. Thanks for posting RM, are they all going to be RH drive?
  18. The plane was apparently the 26 year old presidential Tupolev TU 154, and while this crash appears to have been caused by human error the TU 154 has allegedly killed 1727 people in 16 incidents since 1994. I had never fully understood the Katyn massacre until researching today, but remember my father reduced to tears telling me that he had lost several of his university pals in and around Katyn, all army officers.
  19. Don't answer the phone while doing the ironing, and if you do don't ring for an ambulance...
  20. Certainly was, I don't think Adam meant Yagodnik which was used as a staging post on the first raid. There was a good story concerning the billet arrangements at Yagodnik which were infested with bugs, Tait being the only one not to be eaten alive. Word soon got round that even Russian bugs had respect for rank.
  21. Rick I know it was a busy day, but....:nut:
