North yorks railway 1940,s weekend 15,16,17 oct
Smithy replied to private mw's topic in Future events and meetings
Nice video's, anyway got any pictures from the event that want to share with us? -
Thanks for that Ken. I remember they had the gun barrel of I think a Tiger Tank (can't quite remember), I couldn't believe how long it was without the hull attached etc. These two below were outside as well. Sorry for sort of hijacking the Churchill thread!

They look better on the forum than they do when blown up on my pc! Yes that is right where they were located. Did I imagine it or has the Battle for Normandy Museum closed or closed down for a while, does anyone know?
-
I took these in Normandy in 2003. No digital camera back then and these are scans so not the best pics!

Saw this one at Wartime in the Vale. It had just undergone a restoration to get it into this condition, although it wasn't orginally an RAF Jeep.

Nope didn't see that anywhere Clive. I persume that they might sometimes swap around their collection now and again? -
Coventry Transport Museum
Smithy replied to Smithy's topic in Battlefields, museums, monuments and memorials.
Yes looks very similar to that what was on your jeep mate, wonder if there was a company that did these conversions? I was really impressed with the museum as there is a bit for everyone inside who has a bit of a petrol/diesel head whether it is the two or four wheeled verity! For example, Ewan McGregor's and Charley Boorman's bikes from Long Way Down. -
On Tuesday we paid a visit to Coventry Transport Museum. It was the first time that we had been since it was re-vamped a few years ago and I must say I was impressed with it. Entry is free and there is enough to keep you entertained for a good couple of hours. There were a couple of vehicles of military interest and there is also a set-up of what it was like when Coventry got bombed during WW2. Below are a couple of picture's that I took (light issues were a problem), including an interesting variation on Hillman Utility.

future event Foxfield Railway Stoke on Trent
Smithy replied to commander's topic in Future events and meetings
Bump! So does anyone know anything about the above event this weekend? -
I edited an article once and although it got sent to an administrator it does sit on Wiki in the state that you have left it until they either verify it or not (if they don't like what you have put they change it back to what it was before the edit). I was only winding David up anyway as like he says Wiki is probably the first place a lot of people go to find out information. :-D

Apart from anyone can edit wiki :cool2:

future event Foxfield Railway Stoke on Trent
Smithy replied to commander's topic in Future events and meetings
After a little mix up earlier in the year with this thread I see that this weekend sees the Military event taking place at Foxfields Railway: http://www.foxfieldrailway.co.uk/Latest/War%20Weekend.htm Just wondering if anyone who has attended before or anyone who is in the know as to how much it is going to cost to get in? -
show report RAF Cosford Battle of Britain 1940's Weekend
Smithy replied to Smithy's topic in The meetings log and photobook
Don't think so as this was the one from RAF Hendon that arrived at Cosford at the start of July this year. http://www.expressandstar.com/news/2010/07/02/last-surviving-wellington-bomber-arrives-at-raf-cosford/ -

Smithy replied to Smithy's topic in The meetings log and photobook
No I don't think so as it's a special restoration area. Although there is an open week from the 15th-20th November during the weekdays which I read on a poster. Will have a look on the net to see if I can find more details. -

Just popped in for a couple of hours to the above event at RAF Cosford today. Having only recently visited the museum I didn't go around all of the hangers again, instead having a look at the other things on offer. The restoration hanger was opened up to the public showing the Wellington bomber that arrived over the summer for a full restoration. There were three military vehicles, two jeeps and a Dodge WPC. Whilst there were also a couple of engine demonstrations and a Land Army display. Luckily I arrived just a couple of minutes prior to the BoBMF's Dakota flew over. A nice change to a Sunday afternoon, below are a few pictures of the military vehicles.

Darn it, it's back on the same weekend as Dorset as it has been in previous years. Oh well looks like missing out once again!

I was going to come and say hello on the Sunday evening when you were loading the Explorer and living van onto the Alleys low-loader but you looked busy and was speaking to 3/4 others so thought I'd better not but in. -
show report 20 reasons why............ Duxford
Smithy replied to mike65's topic in The meetings log and photobook
Some cracking photos there Mike. I remember going to the July Duxford Airshow about 12/13 years ago now and having a brilliant time. Just being able to see these aircraft flying is just fantastic! -
show report Great Dorset Steam Fair

I was confused as well when I first saw it a couple of years ago. It is actually a Militant that had it's back axle cut off. It's working life was spent in London, I think, so it was shortened to work in and around that area. The guy who owns it reads the forum so he or Croc might be able to provide a bit more information about it. -

And now for some of a few forum members having fun in the playpen! Whilst the Sherman was one of the loads that went around the arena as well. -
Got back late on Sunday evening from Dorset and once again had a great six days at the show. I think I have now got rid of most of the 'Dorset Dust' after five brilliant days of weather and despite a bad start Sunday turned into a half decent day. Once again there were plenty of different things on offer and despite not being able to take the Gipsy this year I still managed to get around the arena in a couple of different vehicles (Cheers Phil and Mike) . When I uploaded my photos earlier I had taken over 350! Below are a few pictures from the show. I'm still sorting the duplicates etc out so will post some more up in time.

There was an article in the latest Classic Military Vehicle magazine about Churchill 3in gun carriers with a picture of this one after it had been recovered some ten years ago. It looks in a pretty similar state to what it was in when recovered looking at the two pictures!
