  1. M8,5/16 UNF,5/16 BSF you should be able to make a educated guess by comparison. You probably just have a strained thread , if it were me - then I would just roll the thread better using a HT bolt , S grade or 8.8 may do it , a cap head screw would be better , gear oil on the threads , enter and screw it in tight. If it fails - then re-tap.
  2. It is very common on modern cars to find fine metric threads esp. on suspension components , and the fine pitch selected varies between manufacturers . Often "flange washer hex. nuts" are used , some with integral (but loose until secured) washers of the Bellville type or serrated locking type. The hex. heads of the nuts are smaller than standard metric fixings where you would use - the common size 13mm 17mm 19mm spanner / socket. A Peugeot 10mm flange nut would need a 16mm spanner , IIRC a Ford 10mm flange nut would need a 15mm spanner , also you will find a use for a 18mm spanner ,, small car exhausts (Fiat for example) - often 12mm spanner , bigger car exhaust manifolds etc. 14mm . So - you can see - a full range of sockets / spanners in metric do have a use

OK , Kinross must have been a single outlet then (can't think of another possibility now) , possibly ADT just had Aston Down ? , my memory recalls they were a little odd compared to the two big auction groups BCA & CMA - something about the Auction catalogues having candy-stripes on the covers , may be wrong there too. Just the fact S/O + Kinross , then it must have been auctioned at that site.

Yes , that is more or less the conclusion I came , I "believe" the first date to be the Solihull "despatch in" date (vehicle was transferred from production line to the despatch department ) BUT it could also be the Solihull "despatched out" date (actual date vehicle left despatch department). There could be quite a interval between despatch in / despatch out it would not be a despatch FIFO system on the parked up lots, although I suppose the production line would be more or less loaded on that basis, however they could be building up more than one contract at a time . The efficiency as to notified decision exactly the Ordnance Depot to be delivered to , I understand most left by rail but some would have been by road , all scope for record card confusion - I suppose the main date has to be the date the Ordnance Depot actually signed for as "cursory inspection - undamaged in transit" , probably there was a quarantine area. The logistics reminds me of factory production planning dept. loading boards with plastic tablets with sticky plastic coloured code dots - long before computers ,,
  5. Almost certain it was Aston Down , they would just move it to nearest disposal site once authorised. Many were returned from Norway to Arbroath and then to Kinross - so a mixed bunch. About that time there was about 30 101" disposed of , very low mileage (best seen at auction) , the rumour was they had been stored at a RAF hangar somewhere up there in Scotland - they were Army.
  6. IT would have come from RM Condor at Arbroath. Fife & Kinross = Kinross Motor Auctions actually at Kinross. I would have to check my diaries , almost certainly I was there on the day , I would have to have a hunt for old auction sales catalogues , IIRC both sites had stripes on the covers. With RM , Plymouth , Arbroath , Norway - it matters not with their operations. Kinross , ISTR had just one more disposal site - I would have to have a bit think of the name - it was in the South West (and yes they did tend to get RN & RM). Their auctions were not as frequent as BCA & CMA - possibly every 6 months. On basic of Aug. 1992 date - I would think the previous auction was 26/02/1992 , because I still have Lot 25 Lightweight GS 55KB92 (winterized) . Yours probably was winterized , both those auctions were packed with winterized Lightweights because the RM was being equipped with 90" , so there was a few minta , 55KB92 was the best of the lot and cheap at £1900, I have had it garaged all these years on blocks , never registered 45,816km / 28,468 miles only.

As young teenagers did in the early 1960's , £5 to £10 spent on a Francis Barnett or James kept us occupied for the 6 weels summer hols (petrol must have been cheap , plenty of free farm diesel available) They must all have been early 1950's civvy , can't recall any early engine features , military - my old man would have soon spotted as he had a WW2 Norton 500 side-valve from his combination days. For some reason a BSA bantam hardly ever turned up & seemed to have a premium asking ££ James were common , very common..

I think the reason is that some of these modern carrier mounted cranes just don't like a side-slope so it is safer to trailer it , going back a few years Krupp had some models you could use the hydraulic suspension uneven to level out. Axle loads too - looks the sort of site access road with temp. bridging , on the continent tele boom cranes often carry counterweights on own towed trailer , same crane in UK it if re-frigged to carry own weights. Abt. 20 years ago I did several prior to purchase inspections , the buyer specified Krupp & they were to be exported to Africa. Had to go to Holland to find what was wanted along with a bloke in tow with the cheque book LoL Interesting to see the Foden still in DP , for whatever reason no civvy paint livery as yet , possibly they think the MOD may wish to buy it back , - no it is a Scottish firm..
  12. And I was about to blame Rumsfeld - there are no "knowns." There are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say there are things that we now know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we do not know we don't know. So when we do the best we can and we pull all this information together, and we then say well that's basically what we see as the situation, that is really only the known knowns and the known unknowns. And each year, we discover a few more of those unknown unknowns.

The brake TEST switch is a early S3 up to abt. 1979/80 , it is manual test just to prove the bulb illuminates , the later version had a BRAKE warning indicator that was automatic test on ignition start. I suppose it depends on the bloke who fitted the rear disc brake axle - did he know what he was doing , the 90" originally had a shuttle PDWA valve for dual circuit line failure (failure illuminated BRAKE) , later rear disc axle had a "G" valve , then a Proportional Force Regulator Valve (COMPENSATOR IIRC was only with rear discs) - it all get very complicated with "change points".

  18. Angle thingie on back of front diff - yes. The axe/holder could be a civvy owner addition. ------ Ref , welding a plate over the VIN , I have known this where a chassis is sent for galv. the plate is removed after , but no zink forget it. If somebody was going to ring - that would be pathetic , to me it is a way of saying this is no longer a RTV Land Rover and does not need type approval . I am the other end of England (north) otherwise I would like a good look at it. The radio - if it makes sense to a FFR radio expert , then gen. or possibly Walted by a radio expert. If the radio stuff is just BS bolted to Dexion - then it is more probable a Walt. btw A Radio Officer on a Lascar crewed MN ship - is the Marconi Sahib LoL Possibly you should raise all this on the ExMLRA Forum..
  19. Yes, correct - just had a look - mine has strg. damper fitted , however PO had power steering fitted - don't know about that - seems a bit daft. Axe holder ? Pioneer gardening tools , I have always had the view that given choice I would have a double blade mattock or single / pick mattock rather than a pick-axe standard fit. Service spade is OK. A axe would be good to have , turned over vehicles for quick evacuation if trapped, along with a "Hooligan Bar" standard fire engine kit along with hyd. powerpack & jack rams etc. 1971 , I was in a VW Beetle hit in side by a Cortina (I think) rolled over three times on Black Hill garage forecourt between Stratford-on-Avon and Leamington Spa. My passenger seat was 4" wide on top of handbrake & I was upside-down with legs trapped , covered in petrol from split tank and engine running ! Fortunate for me the mechanics grabbed a bar and a spade or something ,, So many contradiction features on this truck, possibly the normal facilitator(s) asked "what do you want" on your gunship ? Or a very devious hoaxer on show circuit , but all that trouble - why let it all rot ? Walt it may be but they don't come much better..
  20. Will try an investigate for chassis bracketry, & IIRC the steering drag-link thingie is std. 1. Rear bumperettes seem to be 109" / Lightweight (narrow dimension) , somebody for Walt GLAM-JOB would have done better with proper Defender type.seems more in service we have and it will be serviceable. 2. Axe mountings , so neat , not cobbled , seems as if drawn from stores. 1 + 2 these points alone , presently have swayed me that this is NOT a Walt. For a Walt the gun mounts would be quite difficult to source and can be expensive , no restorer would then leave outside not undercover , same with winch/bumper. I think the chassis is straight civvy spec. can't see hole to UK offside of pintle mounting holes , you should see small holes on outside where NATO socket bracket fits (mine does but PO fitted a Hella DIN socket). Normal civvy - don't think would have the small holes for fixings. Main gearstick , common reinforcement where they snap , those in know for service would reinforce before event. ----- Mechanicals - seems to me requirement for more in-service by special forces not bothered with mpg , although a restorer could even have used a V8 & locked the bonnet at shows (you state not original bonnet though) . Is the wheel mount (spare) more suitable for sand rims/tyres ? I did know of a factory proto V8 , used by head lad on a estate , can't think of year owner sourced (pulled strings) Overspray - is all telling (or a good faker-up) On balance , evidence seems to me - quick prep (for a short in-service)rather than a prissy rivet-counter / embelisher gild the lilly type - and for SAS , sticking my neck out on this , most difficult I have ever come across LoL So yes, I think gen. and this is why the chassis VIN is blanked off - because the truck may have been civvy sourced in a panic , Solihull Spl. Products , Marshall or done by garrison.. THat rear axle , probably to give stronger half-shaft /drive flange - to std. civvy , although civvy V8 drive permanent with Rover axles normally OK . I have all stuff assembled (inc. proper axle-case) to convert my rear drums to disc (more for heavy towing) I suppose I would do same at early 1990's for any HD operation. Somebody may just have used what he had - so no good clue there.. IMHO early date definative will come from a Marconi Sahib assessment of what is extant. Bull it up and drive to Hereford , if you get past the gate-post without a bullet then it passes.. btw I examined dozens of LR's at auction on return from Gulf , that would be 1992 auctions , Lightweights were rubbish rotten chassis and they did not rust out in middle-east. Paint jobs were rubbish , as you know from BM books - probably all sand / yellow stuff from B&Q. Possibly that Golden Yellow was applied as a first basecoat to tone down ?

Does it have a NATO towing socket ? , can't see it or bracketry + correct bracket ? or fitted non-std. location , you state has a Hella DIN type towing socket - how is it wired in , I would expect looped into the NATO towing pack (all wired yellow but numbered). Also - does it have a convoy lamp - any signs of mounting bracket / holes if stripped off ? It does seem like a monumental Bitsa that somebody has done a fair job of militarization , normally I can soon zero in with Series. ------- I have 57KG59 (abt. 1987) 90" TUL GS 12 volt , all straight but PO removed the convoy lamp & NATO socket , recently obtained same. Just the County seats to dispose of - although they are good so may hide under canvas duck covers , two folding forward facing seats in tub , matching County trim - probably retain. I could never raise enthusiasm with coil sprung , never got into rivet-counting stage.
  24. Nearside front headlamp - is that blue paint under ? When I see yellow & blue , then I think Coast Guard , NCB Opencast Executive. May pay to prise / grind off plate covering chassis VIN branding , evens somebody has passed weld bead runs over & flush ground , or just ground out. Is there any branding mark on that plate ? So many possibilities - how you have described the chassis , may be total Bitsa Walt or real deal on a "replacement" chassis that was civilian BUT correct DVLA witness procedure & their chassis marking to pass off ??
