As I'm fairly new to the Forum this subject will probably have already been covered. The lesson on Armour V L/Rovers was it not learnt in NI. when they kept losing bods in L/Rs so started to Use Saracens and Pigs. I Know when I was there what I prefered to ride in.

nothing to do with the convoy, but can remember passing Remagan in a military train heading south to take part in an exercise. I could see the bases of the original bridge supports that were still visible above the level of the water.

Talking about M4 aiming marks, the same happened when the extra armour was welded on as picture 1, it gave the germans a good idea where to aim. The extra armour was welded on the outside of the ammo bins.

They made all "Other Ranks" Sgts, as according to the Geneva Convention all ranks under Sgt could be made to do work, and senior NCO's and Offs didn't have to. Good book on this subject is Hitlers British Slaves.

Theres an episode in Dad's Army where Pvts Pike and Fraser are using one to make porridge in during a Home Guard exercise. The Brit Army version was in use until the late 80's if I remember. Also they are used in the film Zulu at Rorkes Drift.

I can remember one time in Germany late 70's , early 80's there was such a shortage of CVRT engines that unit LADs were used to strip down and cannablise U/S engines and rebuild them. At one stage the Sqn hangers looked like a breakers yard, this was the same period as Aliens bent barrel on a schimitar report, in fact it happened about 6 feet from me.

My big brother was involved with the conversion to Diesel for CVRT, reliably informed as vehs became VOR due to engine failures they were left until they were converted, so a lot of engines taken out of the converted vehs were U/S.
