When you unloaded the gun, it could hold up to six rounds, these rounds would not be in clips as 1 would be in the breech and up to 5 on the feed tray. these would be removed 1 x 1 and placed into the ready round tray. After the unload is complete the rounds have to be replaced into the clip to protect the precussion cap. The rounds could be, loaded into the feed individually. if required I personally never used the loading aid to reclip the rounds and I can't remember ever seeing them being used. Barry.

Firing of live on a blank exercise was/is a very common practice, that is why the new Blank Firing Safety System was introduced. As well as a seperate magazine the BFA is designed to stop up to 3 live rounds before failure. The magazine has a piece fitted to the front to only allow the slightly shorter blank round to be loaded. see attached article, (shows New Cadet Rifle, but more or less the same.) There is a small piece on the mag and BFA top right corner.

The ammo allocation for a rifleman is 6 30rd mags for own use, 2 30 rd mags for the Sections LSW and a bandolier of 150 rds in clips of 10, thus giving another 5 mags worth of ammo. Barry

I was about to say the QOY as well, served with them for 12 years, Ferret, Fox, Scimitar, Sabre then back to Scimitar. Barry.

I went to a show at Harperley POW camp a couple of years ago with a group of ex and serving squaddies , there was a CVR(T) Sabre? on display there. The rest of the guys and myself made comments re its immaculate condition more or less stating "never seen 1 in that condition, even when issued". Barry.
