  1. It looks a bit like an internal security vehicle, possibly from Ireland? It the grey paint is original, poss. RUC. This is one for Clive, I think. ;-)
  2. Here is a photo of the Jungle 25pdr from The Rotunda, outside my workshop after restoration. It is the one now on display at the Firepower museum. Hanno was asking of its purpose, well in hill country, as in the Far East, more elevation is required, so the trail breaks its back to enable this, the narrow track for obvious reasons. I think in heavy going, a jeep would struggle because of the weight imposed on the tow hook. This example has a normal width shield fitted, and it had been on display like this for years previously. Richard
  3. If a Ferret Thermos was demanded from RAOC, in the late 1980's, a modern type stainless steel Thermos was issued under the same NSN. My memory is a little vague, but believe outside diam. was about the same with a handle /strap on the side and a cup on top. Finish was in natural S/steel, with green plastic trimmings, ie cup interior and strap.
  4. Clive, I did think it odd the other day when you posted 54 and 55 together. Then today I noticed the draught eye and realised it was a plan view of a trailer. Good one  Keep 'em coming! Richard
  5. Clive, I hesitate to answer in case this a trick, but it looks like FV2826 Trailer, Antenna, SAGW AA No.11, same as Mystery Object No. 55 Richard
  6. David, Have not even looked at your website :dunno: I was aware of the conversion. Having been involved in keeping the wheels and tracks of British defence moving for many years, I do keep abreast of these things :-) Lets have something really obscure next time. One that keeps us guessing, like Clive's mysteries!
  7. Hi Tony, I do remember this one, it used to do the local shows in East Sussex and Kent and if my memory serves me correctly, it was at that time owned by Nick Haywood, who lived just over the border in East Sussex. Richard
  8. Just look for an old Suffolk lawn mower engine, same plug (J8) in them as Bedford, GMC................
  9. MLRS Repair and Recovery Vehicle A number of MLRS vehicles were converted for this role. Richard
  10. Mike, I have just noticed something in your earlier post, the sum total of both rear axles and front comes to 32.5 tons, where as the recovery data gives front and rear lift weights, which added together to not come to the gross weight. Looking at other vehicles in this recy data, they also do not add up. An example; Saracen Front lift 3 ton 19 cwt Rear lift 3 ton 19 cwt GVW 10 ton 4 cwt (On this vehicle, when doing a lift from either end, the centre axle has to be free of the ground, and centre wheels removed)
  11. Mike, You cannot disagree with a Ministry weighbridge test results. I checked the MVEE vehicle data book and that coincided with the REME recy data. Have you found any manuals, data, etc on your specific model of Antar? Richard
  12. change the background to green and lettering to yellow, then it matches the shirts, etc. True corporate image then.
  13. No, but bought an air nibbler at GDSF and it was cr*p, works on thin guage sheet which I would not be using on MV's. So my advice is check the max. thickness it will work with. Richard
  14. Attention !! Could the person who parked a CVR(T) outside the Clubhouse, please move it because it is blocking the bike shed. Tony B can't park his Raliegh Chopper.
  15. Kalmar Rough Terrain Container Handler ( RTCH )
  16. Jack, If you were nearer, I would, but have a lot on at present, just take it slowly and don't take chances when pulling the box back. and leave the beers till after the jobs done, they may cloud your minds ;-)
  17. Oh and one other tip from those that know ;-) Do not let the geabox drop out of line with the clutch whilst the shaft is still engaged in the clutch plate. This will distort the clutch centre and the clutch will drag, then you will have to do the job all over again  Richard
  18. We used to see them a lot before the "Historic" road tax exemption came in, because the vehicle was then classed as a mobile crane on a low tax. I slept in the back of one of those and got up under the jib and cracked my head once
  19. Lawson, You said it would stop slipping if you released the clutch and then let in in again, just had a thought, that the pedal linkage could be a bit stiff somewhere, go through it first before doing anything drastic. Richard
  20. Lawson, Before doing anything drastic, check you have free play on the clutch pedal linkage. It may be that the clutch has worn a bit and the fingers have come out slightly and decreased the clearance. There will be an adjustable link rod adjacnt to the clutch arm on bell housing (not too familiar with GMC, but you should see it). Also, I agree with Tony (N.O.S.), except on one thing, always use an aligner to set the clutch plate centrally, without it you will struggle. True it is possible to do without, but then you have to view the plate end on and if you are only going to pull the gearbox back about 6 inches, then eyeing it up will be impossible. Richard
  21. Bullet proof tyres ??? Look like ordinary tyres........and anyway, Runflats were not bullet proof. Then it also had new timing belts on the last service, must be a diiferent engine in it then :?
  22. Tony, Is this the one that was restored to its appearance when stationed at RAF West Malling? Think it was restored by Don Wilmott, in the Bristol area if it is that one. Richard
  23. No, no John, We practise fitting it the day before, then they come and film it, just like they do on the telly ;-) Anyway, there was not that much cursing when removing it, was there? Richard
