  1. Welcome in. Someone who has seen the light!
  2. Welcome, you will be in good company here.
  3. There is a film concerning the Israli war of independence that depicts an ambush of armed vehicles by Israli Half Tracks armed with small artillery pices and 20mm Orleikons.
  4. No, Richard, I'm stupid, not ***stupid! The water is to put the fire out if the oil overheats. The bucket rests on a couple of bricks, then a scrap wood fire lit undeneath. One useful bit of kit I keep in the workshop is a fire blanket. Keeps welding spatter and grinding sparks at bay as well. For small parts a Lapidary tumbler, used to polish stones for jewellery is a nice tool. You can get various grades of polishing material.
  5. Spoke to a guy I knew from Halstead today. He said the device your uncle was on about was an Autocolimator. It shines a series of tight focus beams through to reflecting mirrors. When the lights hit the internal surface, provided it is spotlessley clean, the angle of deflection can be measured.
  6. Welcome to another Dodge owner! We've been overun with Ferrets latley. Please post pictures. A lot of dodge advice available here.
  7. The trick is not to let it get it to hot! The water douses the fire. It does take a lot to get old engine oil to burn. Very useful technique.
  8. Cheers mate! That's the sort of thing I was thinking of!
  9. Micheal Morpurgo's other book about the Great War. The reminisences of a soldier on the night before an execution for cowdadice. Won't say anymore it would spoil the plot, except it is the most stunning book I've read in a long time.
  10. Leave the thinking to the 'orses lad! They got bigger 'eads.
  11. In such cases I tend to soack old rags in Disel burnt oil mix, or whatever penetrant takes you fancy, then wrap and seal the piece in a couple of plastic carrier bags for a few days. If you can warm everything it would help. Stick the hook in an old steel bucket cover with old engine oil and warm on outside bonfire is also very effective for freeing things. Though have a bucket of water to douse the fire handy. Can get exciting if you don't pay carful attention to the oil temprature. Goes rainbowy on top at the right temp. Mollases seems to work as well.
  12. Thanks mate! I've a feeling though in this case we are reffering to the military term of 'Guns' ie Artillery as opposed to small arms. That was the usual military , one size fits no one. So down to Woolwich then for a nose in the Archives. I do know there is in existence (Well about 1990) a journal describing all the trades the Arsenal employed. That would be about the time Armstrong became Chief Enginner. The birth of modern artillery with recoil and smokeles sproppelants.
  13. Right Phil has been tracing his family tree. He has come across a relation living in Erith in about 1890. The Proffesion is given as Gun Maker's Fitter. The obvious connection is Woolwich Arsenal. Any of the red legs out there have any idea what a Gun Maker's Fitter would do?
  14. I'm pretty sure you can get standard BSP thread plumbing taps to fit. I did it on one Land Rover with an Artic heater some years back. It worked. Trouble is to work the heater you have to open the bonnet.
  15. Welcome, but be carful! Ferrets seem to bred quickly.:-D
  16. Bloody hell! I'd have a job following his example!
  17. Wasn't there a twin engined half or 3/4 track version of the Martian? An experimental tool, but may have been earlier.
