  1. There are plenty of people around Tonbridge can help. It is worth joining IMPS, MVT, EMLRA or all. There are various insurance deals etc avavilable to members and of course the knowledge base. If you are a memeber of some of the civillian motoring clubs , they used to do a pre sale inspection. Remeber any check you do will be state 'At the time of examination' so have a look for anything that may cause a problem in the near future. Fuel tanks and body panels are the most awkward things I know of to replace. Electronic ignition is the best upgrade to look for. They do make life so much nicer, the old system works, but does need maintinence. Rear chassis member replacement is almost a routine job with old Land Rovers. It is a negotiating point for a sale, if the member is in poor condition the vehicle will fail MOT as unsafe, and if it is questionable, should be replaced.
  2. My normal mix is a splash of this one, and a splash of that one.:-D Depending on part, if the bit is fixed such a hitch. Soack a rag in the mix wrap round and put a plastic carrier bag over it then leave for a while.
  3. Take someone else with you to see it! As cynical a person as possible, stops you when the stars in your eyes blind you. Engage four wheel drive low by pushing down yellow lever, check it out. Clear low by working red lever back and fore. If low dosen't clear, quietly check wether spring has gone down into transmission tunnel. If it has leave in palce, bargin very low price 'cause gear box is knackered. Then when bought for pennies, unscrew yelllow knob remove spring. Put a couple of washers down the lever reftit spring and knob work red again. Pay particular attention to the rear chassis member, tap thouroughly. Check for thick wads of underseal or filler. Outriggers are another place that get holes don't assume because it is only a small hole it is no problem. Drop windscreen and check bulkhead top bar. They are notorious rust traps. Foot wells . Leacking fuel tanks are a problem they are nigh on impossible or blistering expensive to replace. Check voltage, 12 volt or 24. If it has been converted from 24 to 12 you can end up with a lot of problems. Bear in mind the Light weight is an enthusats vehicle, IE everything is diffucult or expensive to scource. You may well be better to consider a plain Series 3 109 GS. West Kent you say, where abouts?
  4. Yes Gents! But after 6 months and not there? Plus when did the Goverment ever make public that vehicles have to be on there? Or that the REGISTERED KEEPER is liable for an £80 fine? And you can nothing about it! I was and still am deeply unimpressed, and will be changing insurance companies.
  5. Not apcoraphyl! There were 4 G Wagens brought back, when parts were wanted , same reply. I n that case Merc were told to take the matter up with the previous owners.
  6. The British SLR was adjust by hand. The normal setting was 3 . We had a bast**d PO on the range who would close a couple before firing, so if you didn't check it would kick like a mule.
  7. Welcome Paolo There are a lot of modleers here. The rset of us just marvel at the skill. Post pictures .
  8. Insurance seems to rest on who you happen to talk to at the company at the time. I've had nightmares over the last year with two diffrent companies, one of which I don't even HAVE insirance with! DO check , and I will now ask for written conformation, that the vehicle has been enetered onto the Vehicle Insurance Database. If the company dosen't, and they are the only ones that can, you are liable for an £80 fine!
  9. This is one day event in the Dartford Central Park, on May 12 2012. The idea is celebrate Dartford's industrial history (Vary varied belive or not) It is fre entry to the public and the organisers would like to try thier toes in the military vehicle feild. There is also a road run on the 13th May. I have the entry forms so if you PM me with an e-mail adress I'll send them on. http://www.daimler-fighting-vehicles.co.uk/ The Damiler FVS are also involved.
  10. Think of all the good times.
  11. I'd have the dynamo out, it should put out about 18 volts unregulated. Check it thouroughly, I know one that dropped a bearing and did similar. The bearing was dated 1945, so it couldn't be claimed under warranty. :-D Nothing on rebuilding a dynamo is very difficult, and it'll benefit from a good clean anyway. I've never had any trouble getting new bearings from local suppliers. Brushes and the holding springs are definitley suspect. You will have to repolarise the Dynamo afterwards. Do that before the regulator is wired up! Faliure to do so can be very expensive on regulators. To polarise you flick a lead from the battery to the feild winding, just once so you get a spark. Check on the web, for the life of me I can't remember which pole for which earth. An old Haynes manual has all the details, something like a Landy Series 1. If that dosen't cure the problem then you have a good clean working Dynamo anyway. Note: Old Mechanic's tip: Before fitting run a file or emery over the end of new carbon brushes to make sure there is no insulating laquer left on.
  12. Yeah, if we had know as kids :banghead:
  13. Welcome Blanka! The college I went to (A long time ago now) Was the Warwickshire College of Agriculture at Moreton Morell Warwickshire. It became a college in 1948, the reason for all this is, before that during the years 1940-47 it was the Headquarters of the Free Czech Forces! :-D
  14. Check dynamo brushes, regardless of what volt meter is saying. Clean up commutator where brushes contact. When you say the battery lead off, are you reading at battery when connected, then taking the lead off? Because if your then not getting a voltage at the battery lead, the dynamo 'ain't putting out a voltage, your'e reading the battery. Two problems come to mind, brushes as said and polarisation. Have you been fiddiling latley? :nono: Before repolairising, disconnect regulator. Deatils on the net. Loose fan belt, or slipping pulley, and of course CLEAN all contacts make sure there tight. Dynamos are pretty bomb proof, regulators can be a pain. Clean all the relay contacts gently with a emery board, don't be tempted to fiddle with adjustment, if any obvious scorch marks on winding, I'd advise a proffesional rebuild. Have you an amp meter fitted? If so what's that up to?
  15. Section 5 ! Discharges noxious substance! :-D
