  1. reinforced plough Tony?...if you gave one of those old massive artillery shells a good enough 'clang' to set it off.. I reckon you'd need the tractor cab seriously reinforced too
  2. a billion ? a million ? a hundred thousand? ..I don't have a clue how many were lobbed back and forth ...but ! ... I 'll say this .........If I was a French or Belgium farmer anywhere in that general area ???? even knowing there might be only 3 or 4 un-exploded shells in one of my fields would certainly cause me to worry a bit come ploughing time.
  3. true...a terrible newspaper but...even given they may have jazzed the figures up a bit to make a good story?.. that's still a lot of old ordnance I reckon
  4. Staggering story ....brings the figures to mind to ...and estimated 300 million duds lying out there somewhere....
  5. crikey I'm not that far out with my 'guesstamates' then ...I did read a few years ago that there was a real possibility that the Soviets / Russia still had a large number of T34s in 'storage' .....it was a sort of rumour but then again ...knowing them?? it could well be true.....stashed away somewhere out in deepest darkest Siberia maybe
  6. Sorry ! I did actually mean to lump them all together... the early 'short barreled' version and the T34/85 'long barrel'
  7. I was talking with a good mate the other day and we ended up talking about military vehicles and such , and he asked ‘does anyone have a Tiger tank?..... I said yes , there were a few still in existence ....but other than the Wheatcroft collection in the UK and the Littlefield collection in the US , no others ( that I knew of ?) were in ‘private’ hands... I mentioned the others I could think of , being in museums (either nice and tidy ‘inside’ or a few that were a bit rough, mounted as static exhibits outside) and some scattered here and there as roadside memorials . He asked what one was worth and I said that if one came on the ‘market’...... you would need to be a very seriously wealthy individual to even think about acquiring it because of how rare they are...so then of course, he asked.... ”So how many Tigers did I reckon were left in the world ?.. how many Panthers ?... and then , how many Shermans etc ?” !!! I had to have a think before replying .. So, of the really ‘iconic’ tanks of WW2 ?..just how many do you folks think /reckon/know ...are left in existence?? I know some of you are far more familiar with the ‘tank world’ than I so I thought I’d ask on HMVF.... Now to clarify the tanks I’m talking about....and yes I have deliberately left out Soviet JS1s & 2s and German MK4s , Mk5s , Chaffees , Stuarts/Honeys , M26s and a few other British cruisers types. The ‘big six’ as I see it goes like this: Tiger Mk 1 / King Tiger (Mk 2) / Panthers / Shermans / T34s and finally Churchills I have included all ‘known’ survivors in my vague reckoning ...from museum pieces either mint or wrecks or currently being rebuilt , privately owned (the same ..either being worked on or complete), battlefield wrecks (such as the Shermans in the Pacific Theatre), range wrecks...any that may still be in Government hands in some of the more obscure countries ( Shermans in Argentina/ Israel /Indian /Pakistan? T34s possibly in former Eastern block countries or Middle Eastern countries maybe?) So ....here I go to make a fool of myself or not... these figures are my 'best guess' at what is left... in any condition, somewhere ‘out there’ in the world .... what do you all think? Oh by the way ... I'm talking about ‘gun tanks’ not any of their variants Tiger Mk 1s: no more than 15 Tiger Mk2s: no more than 10 Panthers: no more than 30 T34s: probably somewhere between a 500 and a 1000 Shermans: somewhere between 400 to 800 Churchills: less than 100 All contributions welcome no matter how disparaging or otherwise !
  8. lovely stuff ...I've always loved Fairgrounds :cheesy: ....when the fair came every summer to a green near where I grew up I would happily wander down there...not to go on the rides because I never had enough pocket money to indulge in that as much as I wanted to....instead I would spend hours just wandering about behind the rides admiring all the massive living vans and looking at the usual array of 're-jigged' ex-army vehicles they had Great stuff ! thanks for sharing !
  9. oh boy that is one gorgeous piece of engineering you have there
  10. showing ignorance a bit Sorry in advance !.. ..but...how often and in what circumstances did the Lancaster carry a '2nd Pilot' ??? ..... Thanks A grand and honourable investigation by the way !
  11. recalling a thread on here a few months back and the implications of the VCR (?) act????? what is the legal position regarding making 'replica' Lewis guns for her??? or come to that ...any other kind of 'replica' gun then ? .....only asking ...because I've often thought of knocking out Sten replicas... ..I've got all the workshop machinery to do so and have had a good look at them ....and I reckon I could do a pretty good job but... I seem to recall someone on here suggesting it was a proper dark area legally to go into ???
  12. I once bought a Series One Landrover that had been a breakdown truck and hence not taxed for many years.....it had a really seriously good number plate on it..and...I did get the old buff Log book with it. I insured it no probs....then went along and taxed it by filling in the old style form for an 'application for a new logbook' ..so withing a few days I had A: the vehicle with the number plate on ( and had MOT'd it with that number on as well) B: An insurance document with the number plate on and C: a Tax Disc with the number plate on ..... then the fun with the DVLA started They sent me a short and to the point letter... ...."this vehicle is not on the DVLA register with that number and you must surrender the number and you can have anew log book with this number on ...and offered me something useless such as 'XZY 394' .... (this was all apparently due to the fact that the old logbook had not been transferred to a V5 within the given time limit) In short ...I refused to 'hand' my number back unless they gave me a suitable 3 letter number in exchange...(something like 'BOB' or 'TIM' etc) and also sent me the new V5 with the new number before I handed back the old buff logbook. They refused to do so...and replied that I was "breaking the law blah blah by keeping the vehicle on the road with that number blah blah".......... this went on for about 18 months...everytime I wanted a new tax disc I simply filled in another 'request for a new logbook' form and the same stream of letters appeared ........ during this time I was also stopped by the police a number of times and questioned as to why my vehicle number didn't appear on the national registry of vehicles?....I always explained about me having the logbook and a tax disc and an MOT etc etc and they said on all occasions... .. " You're not breaking the law as long as all the documents tie up ..and they do ...so....it's between you and the DVLA" to cut a long story short eventually the DVLA gave in and let me keep the old number but made it 'non transferable'. SO!!!!!!!! whatever you do .don't send the old log book in until you have got a suitable 'new' number out of them.... PS: I don't know if things have changed with the DVLA since my episode by the way !
  13. Mooching as usual I came across this article on moving an entire house in the US..... my question is ... what is the ex army looking vehicle doing the towing in the one picture ? is it a Diamond T possibly ? I haven't watched the full video yet but there maybe some more footage of it in there http://www.messynessychic.com/2013/10/29/the-last-inn-on-the-sea/ just watched the video ..it's only short but it sure does look like a Diamond T to me ????
  14. Hey Willy are you on FB too ??? that picture has come up tonight on WW2 Pictures and I saved it with the same intention...to put it on here ! beaten to the post ! haha !
  15. NOT wishing to depress anyone but... I too wish you luck with a Small Claims Court ..... complete waste of space I've always found  and the rest of Robins post ? :cool2::goodidea::whentitsdone::clap::box::box:
  16. Legally very sticky. Unfortunately the 'Law' isn't always on the side that it should be in such situations . ..I would say : A: Were the items you are now missing obviously present when you first viewed the trucks? if 'yes'? you got a good case...if not..you're stuck B: If you didn't see the actual items ...did the seller intone/promise/say that such items were included in the sale? if 'yes' you got a good case BUT ...you will need a witness to substantiate what you are saying (did the other buyer see and hear the same?)....if not?....you're probably stuck As I said before.....it's been my sad experience that 'the Law' is not always as straight forward and common sense as we may wish or think it should be....... A rotten situation though and I do wish you all the very best with it
  17. crikey that's a good old truck ! ...going to be well worth watching as she comes back together I'll look forward to seeing it on here ! Hats off to you Sir !
  18. sounds great ! I'll look forward to seeing it ....just hope it's a 'serious' film not another daft tongue in cheek one like that other one BP did 'InGlorious so and so's'
  19. hello and welcome ! I've seen that company on the http://WWW...they do probably build about the best 'replica' out there lets see some photos .....and don't feel shy about not owning a 'real' one either....not all of us can find 10 or 15 grand for the 'real thing'
  20. crikey ! what a find !.I know exactly what you mean about how difficult approaching the owner will be ..there's plenty of that type of fella in my neck of the woods and many of them sitting on some good stuff ex military and otherwise... about the best you can get out of them is "..You wanna buy my old truck/tractor/Landrover do you????? ...it's an old one that is mind!.......worth a lot of money these days he is mind!....I'm gonna do him up one day !!!" Best of luck ! :cool2:
  21. any man that willingly purchases a V8 is a friend of mine
  22. hahah :cheesy:....so many not so fond memories of my ATC Uniform in the early '70s !...and the button on stiff cardboard shirt collars one thing with that era uniforms I've always wondered. ..just what shape were men in those days ?..when I was issued my ATC uniform in about 1973 it had about a 26" waist ( skinny little fella I was ) with legs about 7' long and enough material in 'the rear' to fit a 20 stone blokes buttocks in them ....caused mother some clever hours of work on her sewing machine to make it fit I can tell you
