  1. According to Bart Vanderveen's book weight is 3668lbs or just under 1.7 tons (imperial weight not US). Incidentally the advertiser has got the model no. partly wrong, WN3 referred to the civilian version which was fitted with the Austin A90 car 2.66 litre 4 cyl engine. The military fv1801 was designated WN1 and was fitted with the Rolls Royce B40 engine and other differences such as waterproofing and electrical suppression.
  2. Have a look at the following arbtalk.co.uk/forum/trading-place/782-boughton-vh6-hydraulic-winch.html This gives the specs for a VH6 winch but should point you in the right direction.
  3. The simple reason for this is incompetent/unsympathetic drivers. I used to work for a company that ran a fleet of naturally aspirated V8 engined Merc tippers, driven correctly they were very good off road but bad drivers would bog them and instead of getting towed out would try to unstick themselves. This would result in destruction of the prop shaft or the clutch or in extreme cases both items caused by the high torque in low gear.
  4. I bought a GMC that the dealer told me had 5th gear blanked off to reduce top speed, when I removed the gearbox top I found half a bearing shell sticking out. To be fair to the dealer he supplied a replacement box without any hassle.
  5. Hi Richard, I should have known you would be the one to come up with the answer to this. I wonder what the reason was for this mod, I would have thought that a crawler gear would have been almost essential when hauling artillery off road with a vehicle which lacked a 2 speed transfer box.
  6. Re the gearbox Richard has come up with the answer. Bart quotes a total of 85 cu's supplied under Lend-Lease in 1942, presumably the reason you give above would account for the difference in quantities as mentioned in your earlier post.
  7. Appears to be one of the American supplied trailers but at some point has been through a French rebuild hence 24 volts but can easily be returned to 6 or 12 volts. As is usual the floor is dented but has been fitted with a wooden slat floor, perfect Worthing canvas top, nearly new tyres, stored inside, regularly sprayed with oil underneath and is rust free. For further information and price please send a PM with your email address.
  8. Thanks for posting Trevor, I wasn't expecting that:blush:.Bart says that the cu and su cargo truck were fitted with a 5 speed gearbox but the su artillery tractor had a 4 speed 'box. Is this either a mistake on Bart's part, a printing error or is it correct. Seems a bit odd to me that a vehicle used as a tractor for artillery wouldn't have the 5 speed 'box.
  9. Could it be that the drive set up was originally for the auger and has been adapted to drive what may be a non original winch? Just a thought and we may never know the answer. I've never seen a photo of an auger truck let alone seen one 'in the flesh'. Perhaps someone can come up with a photo but I won't hold my breath.
  10. It may not have been an artillery tractor, according to Bart some of these chassis's were fitted with augers for bomb digging and were fitted with smaller tyres, dual on the rear.
  11. Wire rope with a 11mm diameter would normally be used on a winch with a capacity in the region of 4.3tonnes, an 8T capacity winch would require a 16mm rope. A 4.3 tonne winch would usually be fitted to a large 4x4 such as a RB44 or slide bed recovery truck whereas an 8T winch would be fitted to a medium heavy recovery truck. As your winch has been standing for a considerable time it's more likely the rope has spread slightly rather than stretched. Hope this helps.

  15. As I understand it the law came into force in the EU in early April but there was no law on the UK statute book under which anyone could be prosecuted. To remedy this and to speed up the introduction of a relevant law an addition was made to legislation which was already going through Parliament but to the best of my knowledge this legislation has not yet passed onto the statute book. As far as I remember it was expected to be enacted sometime this month.
  16. A good result indeed, I wonder how many years he'll get in the slammer, US sentencing seems to be fairly harsh.
