  1. Another update. With the arrival of the rebuilt blocks at Carls work continues to assemble all the previously restored parts and the build up into a power pack.
  2. See my other reply! American built vehicles had a parts list and a series of manuals. After about 1943, they became Ordnance responsibility so the manuals were TM9s (technical manual) and the parts list SNLs (standard nomenclature list) T16 is SNL G-166 and TM9-746. There are also other more detailed manuals with a typical breakdown of engine, systems and transmission, Hull and suspension, etc etc. There are stowage lists in the US books but not diagrams per se. British and Commonwealth stuff was similar but in many ways better, especially for the armoured vehicles. They used proper stowage sketches showing where everything went. Almost works of art!
  3. Hi Luke, no you don't have to introduce yourself, it's just this is more than just a forum, we consider ourselves friends on here so it's a polite way of joining in. Welcome to the madhouse, what tank did you have in mind?
  4. Hi Dave, welcome to the home for the terminally afflicted! Would love to know more about your families experiences.
  5. Now I know you're taking the p**s!
  6. I thought we all wanted them to be as original as possible within reason. There is no need to use metric fasteners when the correct ones are available. Similarly 'modernising' the electrics is not necessary. If maintained properly, the original standard is perfectly adequate. There are always compromises to be made, some enforced by the modern world but in terms of restoration, surely original is best and something we should all aim for? As you say, it is the owners right to do whatever they want.
  7. What he said! Eddy, how could you even consider it......
  8. Cromwell is the same. Mind you, that's where the similarity ends!
  9. The track is (I believe) 25,000 euros. If you can find a Sherman for 50,000 now, I would advise you buy it! You're right, it is a lot of money, but it is a huge outlay for him. Anything Sherman sems to be crazy prices with no real sign of a slackening. The Grizzly tracks were new but sprockets are hard to find though not too bad to make and of course Grizzly track is not 'right' for many Shermans. Needs must though!
  10. It's a Dyson 40 ton mk2. Quite a desirable trailer and a change from all the Rogers you see! Still with its ramps too.......
  11. It was only very late 51s and 52s that were 12 volt. All Carryalls and Command cars were from the start.
  12. I must admit, I have bought the mags for a single picture before now..... Re-reading my post made me think it rather arrogant.... There are, of course, many excellent articles, anything by David Fletcher being a case in point. However, the example that Steve quoted and I suspect we could all come up with some from our own areas of interest, should have been picked up. Hey ho, we're all human! The man who never made a mistake never made anything.
  13. I've given up on the monthly mags, the number of mistakes regarding subjects I do know leads me to suspect a similar level of error in other areas that I feel them a waste of money!
  14. I'm only pulling your leg Tony, though I would vote for you to win that prize! And the prize for the best pun in a post!
  15. That has to be the tackiest thing I have ever seen (on here!) Please tell me you won it in a raffle or something?
  16. Hadn't you heard? Upside down tanks are the in thing this year! It was that way to facilitate welding of the sponson to hull side joints. It should be the right way up now....! I don't want to speak for Adrian S, and he no doubt will be along himself to confirm but I'm sure he hopes so! I agree Alastair, a few miles before the event would be wise.
  17. No. Rediculous? You try having it made from scratch!
  18. I believe they are expecting about 470 HP gross, about a 25% increase. I'm not sure if some of this come from greater speed or just from better breathing.
  19. Well, Adrian Scott told me yesterday that he is going to use new, cast aluminium rocker covers to avoid the oil leaks that the tin originals are prone to. These do look very different if only because they have 'Detroit Diesel' cast into them! From a maintenance point of view it makes sense though. They are the original blocks that I supplied with the project, quite a quick turnaround really.
  20. Carl certainly has his work cut out!
  21. Meanwhile Carl has been preparing all of the parts to build the engines up such as fan drives, rocker covers, clutch housings, governers etc etc.
  22. Another update at last! The freshly rebuilt engines are back and are ready to be built up into the pack. The rebuild included new pistons, liners, heads and injectors. The heads are now four valve which together with the appropriate other items should give a bit more power and a great deal less smoke! The four valves are all exhaust as the two stroke Detroits use ports in the liners for air induction.
  23. A certain amount was due to clearouts from various establishments. Chertsey put their stuff onto Pirbrite and Lulworth received a lot of German armour presumably from Bovington. I've been looking through Key cards for Cromwell and Comet recently and the disposal seems random with some vehicles going for export, some to scrap and others to hard targets. I imagine it was geography that determined final location as much as anything.
