  1. Hello guys, Well I've been on the truck again tonight and didn't finish until 22.00hrs. OK firstly I'd like to thank you all for your help. I've bled countless fuel systems without much trouble. I was doing it the correct way but couldn't understand why the air in the sedimenter just stayed where it was and the fuel wasn't being drawn through the system. I'm lucky in that where I work there is a fully equiped workshop. So I borrowed a vacume pump that you plug into the fuel system to bleed it. I connected it up and guess what..... STILL no fuel coming through. SO I thought I would remove the fuel line from the back of the sedimenter (tank-sedimenter end) and blow down the pipe to see if there was a blockage. When I blew I couldn't hear any bubbles in the tank and it was just too easy to blow down it, so this raised my eyebrows. I split the fuel lines either side of the fuel tap housing so that I could remove the fuel pick up elbow out of the tank. You just wouldn't believe it. The fuel pick up pipe had come away from the elbow, so no wonder I couldn't bleed the system!!!!!! There was NO PIPE to pick up the fuel in the first place.:angry So I had a bit of rubber hose that just so happened squeezed into the elbow. I thought I would just try this to see if it worked. I did everything up. Bled the system up to the F.I.P. in a matter of minutes. As I was on my own I had to crank the engine over then loosen a fuel injector union to get rid of the air. I did this for all 6 injectors. I then turned the key and SHE FIRED UP. :yay:So the problem is solved. The fuel lift pump was still knackered as one of the one way valves was dislodged and hitting the top of the housing, however, it looks like the main reason for the breakdown was the fuel pick up pipe falling into the tank. TWO problems at once. I've now removed the elbow and I'm going to see if I can rig something up at work. Hopefully they will have some pipe the right size. I will post up some pictures sometime soon. Once again thanks for all your help guys.:-D
  2. How do I do this, by removing the dome on top of the pump and filling with diesel?
  3. Hello mate. Thanks for the reply. I've detached the fuel line from the outlet of the mechanical lift pump and then cranked the engine over for about 30 seconds. This has no effect on drawing fuel through the sedimenter. The sedimenter is lower than the lift pump. I think because there is air in the sedimenter, and the lift pump is dry, no amount of pumping will draw the fuel through. I need to get the fuel up to the lift pump but I'm at a loss how to do it. I need some sort of vacume to suck the fuel up to the lift pump. Any ideas?
  4. It's a mechanical lift pump. I turned the engine over for about 30 seconds with the outlet pipe from the lift pump removed but the air in the sedimenter is at the same level, so it's not sucking any fuel through. I'm at a loss.
  5. How do I bleed the air out of my MJ fuel system? I had to fit a new fuel lift pump as it failed on Sunday. I've fitted the pump, but there is air in the sedimenter. I've turned the engine over with the fuel line removed from the pump outlet but with no success. The truck stopped dead as the one way valve in the pump fell out of it's housing. So there is no fuel in the injectors, pipes, injection pump, lift pump and about half an inch of air in the sedimenter. Turning the engine over has no effect in drawing fuel through, I presume because the lift pump is dry and needs priming and also because of the air in the sedimenter. Can anyone help please?
  6. Thanks mate. Shame you didn't get down, it really is a good show. I'm going to need luck, the big test will be on Friday when we travel down to W&P!!
  7. The Matador club!!! They reserved THREE plots last year, one big plot behind us and they never even used it.:nono: Is there enough room for two trucks, two Land Rovers, 3 12x12's, 1x 10 man bell, 1x 9x9 and a civvy tent at Outer Monktons???
  8. Check this site out. Watch the Video's and look at the "Trophy Room". It will have you wetting yourself with laughter. (Damn, the video's are being moved to another server. Keep your eyes out as there class) http://www.419eater.com/
  9. What's the situation like in Outer Monktons. Surely there must be plenty of space left here? Anyone in Medway Overflow yet?
  10. Well this was the first time I've been to this show even though I've lived down the road from it for 8 years. Saturday I took the Bedford down on my own as the other half was working Sat morning. The weather was fair but pretty warm. There was a good turn out of Military vehicles and we had a very good spot just down from the arena, even closer than the tractors which made a nice change. There was a very big turnout of public both Saturday and Sunday. I drove home as I only live 20 minutes away. Everything went fine, until that is the next day!! Sunday saw us leave at 08.30 am. I was driving the Bedford and the other half was driving the Defender. I was cooking on gas until about 2 1/2 miles out when all of a sudden the Bedford just shut down. There was no warning, the engine just stopped. I took her out of gear and coasted up to a slip road where the truck was out of the way. I got out and had a look at the fuel tap to see if I left it off, it was on. I then checked the fuel to see if some scroat drained the tank, half full. Thank god I had the trusty Defender at my disposal as I never had my tools with me (this is the first time I've left them behind). I drove back home and got the tools. First job was to undo the bleed screw on the FIP. I then pumped the lift pump to see if I was getting any fuel through, nothing. I then removed the fuel filter to see if there was a blockage, no crap in the filter and when I pumped the primer with the filter off no fuel was coming through. It must be the diaphram in the lift pump split. Checked the oil but there was no diesel in it.... This was turning out to be a nightmare. The only option I had was to drive up to the showground and see if someone could help out. I would like to take this opportunity to thank David Stevens for his outstanding generosity and Keith Orpin for stopping to see if he could help.: David agreed to follow me back to where I had broken down in his Reo Shop Van even though he was about to enter the arena. His Reo has a winch and thank god, a straight bar. We attached the rear of the Bedford to the rear of my Defender and David drove my Defender while I was in the Bedford. We pulled the Bedford back up the slip road so that it was in the right direction to be towed back to my place. We hooked up the Reo to the Bedford and he straight barred me back home. We then travelled back to the showground, David in his Reo and us in my Defender. After we got back after an excellent show I removed the fuel lift pump. On opening up the pump expecting to see a knackered diaphram I was shocked to see that one of the one way valves had just fell out of it's housing. So this was why I was not getting any fuel through. The tiny little metal fins that hold the valve in place had snapped off. I also noticed that the gauze filter in the top of the lift pump was very choked with crud. So I call Dave at Bedford Parts first thing this morning and a new fuel lift pump and fuel filter are on their way, so hopefully I should get them tomorrow. I can't thank David enough as he saved me a fortune in recovery costs. He refused to take the money I offered for his time and only took enough to cover his fuel. It never ceases to amaze me how helpfull most people are in the hobby. This is the first time since starting shows in 1989 that anything like this has happened. I'm due down at W&P Friday so hopefully the truck will be up and running by then. So once again a big thank you to David Stevens for getting me out of the brown stuff. Top bloke!!!
  11. We should be down this time next week. Have to meet my mate in his Reo who is coming up from Cornwall. I decided not to take the Defender this year to save a few pennys. My other half is taking her car as a support vehicle so we can get to the shops etc. Looking forward to it. Missed the last two shows this year due to work and weather. Got Woodcote this weekend though, lets hope we get the usual roasting hot weather at W&P. I'm in need of a tan...:cool2:
  12. Thought next Friday was the earilest you can enter show ground, well that's what the bumph says anyway?
  13. Your not going to stop drivers falling asleep or day dreaming, but you can help the situation. As a waggon driver of many years I can speak from experience that using amber beacons does help. When driving an artic or other large truck, when an amber beacon is spotted well in advance a driver (I can only speak for myself here) will start to assess his options straight away. He/she will be watching the rear view mirrors like a hawk waiting for the right moment to pull out into the centre lane/outside lane (dual) so that their progress is not interfered with. Beacons are used for large, wide, heavy, slow loads etc. If the truck doesn't look to be over width or length then a beacon is telling you the vehicle is probably travelling pretty slowly. You then pull out in plenty of time so that you are not slowed down. This might not stop vans and cars from getting too close too fast to your rear end, but 8 out of 10 times if it's a waggon then he will pull out a lot sooner. I only do 40-45mph in my Bedford but haven't got an amber beacon. I was chatting to a mate who is a Traffic Copper for the Met about the use of amber beacons on slow ex military vehicles. He said most if not all traffic coppers will not stop you for making the vehicle more visible dispite the fact it's illegal as they can see that you are doing everything you can to be as safe and seen as possible. Common sense I think. I'm thinking of getting one for the truck dispite what the regs say.
  14. Cool. See you there guys. Will be taking the Bedford and probably the Defender to. Might come home for the evening though as it/s only just down the road.
  15. Lee kindly saved our group a space last year. There was a large section behind us between us and the Excalliber lot. The group that reserved the space reserved TWO plots. One in our field and one near to Withams. Two vehicles turned up, stayed a while then dissapeared up to the plot they had at the top. It stayed empty until about the Friday or saturday of the show when a few vehicles not belonging to the group went into some of the space. There was still a massive amount of empty space though. Personally I don't think anyone should be able to reserve space. Turn up and pick your area is how it should be. Take to much and the field Marshals should take the spare space and give it to someone else.
  16. Anyone going to Woodcote Steam Rally next weekend? http://www.woodcoterally.org.uk/
  17. Hello mate. You have done a fantastic job of restoring the TM. By the way I'm also an ex member of 7 Squadron!!! C Troop.:-D
  18. I use card that they put between sugar and the like on pallets. Cut out the stencil using a craft knife. I then apply double backed sticky tape around the edges to stop paint getting behind. Get a fine washing up sponge and tape the corners so you are left with a ball type arrangement. Apply paint onto sponge and dab onto scrap card to ensure not to much is applied and then get to work.
  19. Spitfire doing a display at the Dalton Barracks open day yesterday.
  20. Thanks for your reply Richard. Seems a bit strange not having a cover there as it's a big hole. All sorts of crap could end up in there. There is a blanking plate on the other side though.
  21. Where the clutch fork comes out of the bell housing on a Bedford MJ, is there supposed to be a rubber dust cover of soughts over the hole? Mine hasn't got any sort of cover and I presume there is supposed to be one. Any one got any photo's or info, or is it not supposed to have a cover fitted? Cheers
  22. Sorry to hear this bad news. I didn't know the guy, but we are all family in the Military Vehicle Movement. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time. RIP mate.
  23. I'm gutted!!!:embarrassed: Due to work changing the weeks excersize from two weeks time to Monday (told on Thursday) I'm not able to attend the show this year, as I'm starting very early on Monday and have to pack and get my kit sorted. It's too far to go just for one day. I'm not happy. I was really looking forward to the show. I didn't make the Wiltshire Steam Rally I was supposed to attend two weeks ago either due to the weather ragging it down with rain all weekend. Sorry Paul for not giving you notice, but only found out Thursday about this change. I hope the show goes well and the weather smilles for you. I will be booking in for next year for sure.
  24. One is clearly a Transportable Container converted to house those generators. Are they original? Interesting to see a Daf with a winch on the front. It's good to see what can be done with those vehicles, although the choce of colour isn't what I would have gone for!!
  25. One of the guys where I work was employed as a test driver for many years at Chertsey. He has lists of all the vehicles he was involved in testing. He was involved with the testing of WOLF in the development stage and was instrimental in the changes that were made to the WOLF before it went into service.
