  1. Be very careful, if you are gonna reduce it's weight.... they weren't designed to run very far on tarmac etc when completely empty, as the increased angle of the Tracta joints will in turn increase the risk of damage/premature wear on the hub/bevel boxes, etc. You can get round it by adjusting the suspension so that it's ride height makes it ride as if partly weighed down.... this is why Saracens/Saladins behaved themselves better than Stolly's, when used on roads more. Their greater weight kept the tracta-joints/shafts in more of a straight line, i.e. horizontal:nono::readbook:
  2. you are a star, Montie.... thanks again! have you had a go at driving yours yet?.........
  3. Big welcome, and well done for finding us,...here's my little baby! Pic 1: as it is now... Pic 2: before I restored it... Pic 3: A tour of the Arena at Overlord 2009, Horndean, Hants... Pic 4:... also available as alternative to limo/wedding car hire!....Brides choice on this occaision!
  4. CS95 = Combat Soldier 95 (as in 1995), which is when it was 1st designed/introduced.... the shirts are good, but stinging nettles will get your legs through the trousers, unless you wear longjohns or goretex overtrousers, (or both)...... ouch!
  5. thanks Montie1... you are the man!
  6. I know screens for saracens did exist, once. This is up on ebay at the moment, and I'd like to know if it is for the good old Saracen...:-\ I have a suspicion it is for a Ferret, though....
  7. The Centurion Tank....... wins hands down.
  8. ...yes, that's my contact for goodies.....where I saw the saxon engines...
  9. being diesel and Bedford.... it'll probably run quite happily on old chip oil for donkey's years! so it should be cheap enough to run,... not only that Saxons are being gotten rid of in their droves now too, some will have useable but non-running engines no doubt....
  10. ...apparently they have quite a few lots/items of engine spares too....:cool2:
  11. I can vouch for this in my early driving attempts, yes it does take you by suprise and can be very painful,... it's something you tend not to repeat if possible!
  12. ...amazing attention to detail!... -now can we get him to do a Saracen, (Mk5 like mine!), a Saladin, a Ferret, and a Stalwart?...... there's a challenge!
  13. I was sent an email today by one of my 'contacts' and they are selling, admittedly by auction, rather a lot of Saxon based spares.....including New/ remanufactured Bedford 6 cylinder 8.2 ltr Normally Aspirated Diesel Engines... I have numerous pictures of them, you can have one for starting price £1000, or lots of 2, or 5, priced accordingly. Looking at the photos, they seem to be very similar in physical size to the B80/81, exhaust is on the left side, so that suits Saracens/Saladins, also the crankshaft appears to be nice and low down, with the flywheel very close to the base of the shallow sump (dry-sump?) ...check out the picture...... they also have matching new fully auto boxes, relatively reasonably priced, although not sure whether they'd be easy to match up to the transfer box on Saracen/Saladins... might be ok in a Stolly though.... think of the extra oomph 8.2 ltrs will provide!
  14. I was thinking of perhaps making up a water tank and fitting instead of the o/s/r bin.... away from the exhaust.... As for my current silencer, I think it'll survive a little longer with a patch-repair, for the time being... i know what you mean about heat there though!... you want to see how hot your left boot gets on a long run!.... especially in hotter climates like yours!.....
  15. ...I already snapped up a new old-stock one in a crate for £750, about a year ago, seems the problem was the flywheel leaking, intermittently (ie, when it got a tad warm....).... looks like I've found a source for new flywheels now, amongst other parts!
  16. The 'unmasculine' 'pink' coat hanger just doesn't go well with the greens/browns of DPM.....
  17. Don't tell my missus, but, in my loft I'm collecting enough parts to build a supercharged B81 engine for my when my Saracen's B80 engine gives up, and a Mk1 Ferret........:nut::rotfl:-don't laugh! ...-I'm sure it can be done!
  18. Ok, thanks Montie, that looks fairly easy/straightforward, i look forward to seeing the 'hanger',... maybe this design could also be adapted, with internal baffles for making new stainless silencers for all the rusty, blowing exhausts there seems to be....:-\:-D, or even slightly narrower, with the filler postitioned so it'll fit, and take up 1/2 the depth of a side bin, so as to still keep a bit of stowage space, (maybe it'll keep beers and sandwiches cool, too! lol!)
  19. ... gearbox change/repair on a Ferret....-not a nice job, agreed! .... fancy trying it on a Saracen?..... I hope I never have to do it on mine!:shake::angry:sweat:
  20. or you could just order it and collect it when it arrives.... as I do, with both CMV and MMI:)
  21. oh it is, believe me! I got lost in there once! for at least 3/4 hr!... what he hasn't got, clothing-wise is probably not worth having.... one 'room' is devoted almost entirely to 'webbing, '37 pattern'...... almost every part available, ever!
  22. ....ah! didn't realise there was a date in the figures quoted....
  23. vast stocks of the correct type of DMS and NI Boots, also lightweights with side pocket available from 'Sabresales' of Portsmouth, Hampshire, U.K.... for best results, google if not local, phone and ask to speak to 'Nick'
  24. could also be a '44 pattern water bottle pouch, especially since it appears to be in the richer jungle-green colour....
