  1. BAT M looks like something off Robotwars!:-D
  2. Hi Montie..... In the water they are driven by 'Dowty Water Jets', similar to jet skis, although the British Army had the swim gear removed from a lot of Stalwarts. The wheels will propel a Stalwart by themselves, whilst floating, but only very slowly. Also, believe it or not a Saracen will 'swim' using its wheels for propulsion, with extensive preparation,..... the water level when afloat is around the ridge at the edge of the roof,....-now there's a scary thought!!
  3. It'll put more strain on the driven parts, thus negating any fuel savings by making other bits wear out quicker, and so cost that way instead....:nono:
  4. oh, I see....... they sound quite good, too........:cool2:
  5. precisely...what?.............:-|
  6. funnily enough, I was driving a dustcart the other day, perkins eagle diesel, with allinson fully auto 5 speed box,...IF it could be made to fit, it would be a fairly swift vehicle and good on fuel, dustcart weigh up to 26ton, laden and still return 12-15mpg when loaded!........:cool2:
  7. try getting a bolt, hardened one would be best allen-key type, and carefully using an angle grinder with a cutting disc fitted, cut 3 angled 'lands' (grooves), so that it resembles a tap, then using a lathe, turn a very, very slight taper on the end, tidy thread with a file where taper has been turned, ...hey-presto a cheap thread chaser!.... it usually works for me!:cool2:
  8. steering does move whilst engine running, but stationary... it is heavy though, compared to when rolling under power. Try steering when engine not running.... you'll find that with extreme effort it will steer, but only if moving....:shake:
  9. they'll most likely be a UNF size thread, Montie,.....very early Mk Saracens, Mk1's and early Mk2's were, if I recall what my maunuals preach BSF sizes,..... but I would imagine all of the Saracens ever made/modified whilst 'in-service'.... this type of fitting would more than likely be it's original ones..... and most definately 'Imperial' (ie. Inch), rather than metric (mm). I'll consult my books.....:readbook:
  10. Hi Montie! Seems you've come along in leaps and bounds!.... well despite me having problems with my saracen, as in it won't run or drive at the moment, I'll try and knock-up a 'static' driving lesson video for you, over the next day or so..... it ought to be able to illustrate method of changing gear etc, if nothing else....:-\ well done for getting mobile with yours,....now the real fun starts!....:-D:cool2:
  11. Does anyone know if there is a an AUTOMATIC gearbox available, such as Borg-Warner, or Allinson etc that would marry-up to a B80 engine and a Saracen transfer box? ... been on my mind a while now,..... or would the engine and auto-box out of a Dennis Eagle Dustcart fit in the engine bay of a saracen, I drive these dustcarts at work, and they are certainly more 'nimble' than one would think, and have very good acceleration when both empty (just over 14ton, and full, 26ton!) and are capable of very respectable cruising speeds 60mph... just a crazy plan I've been hatching.......:cool2:
  12. I've also discovered that I now have to weld up 2 rather large holes in the base of the exhaust silencer...... when I have it'll be SOOOOOO! quiet!...... as it's very quiet, even with the holes!
  13. ...sorry Montie, I have got round to it... 1st off went to yard, but left camera at home!!!, but here are the pictures as promised..... you'll see that the heat shield only seems to protect the distributor..... as long as it covers the base area of that you should be ok, as for material, I'd guess that they were originally made from the dreaded asbestos... but I know of a heat reflective material used by race car/rally car/kit-car suppliers which moulds into compound curves and is safe, ie non-asbestos, I'll send info/pic of it, seperately....hope the pics help...:-D
  14. They are excellent drifting vehicles..... try it in slippery mud, or on a smooth damp/wet field....:cool2::-D:cool2::-D:cool2::-D:drive:
  15. morris Lubricants do an excellent, very reasonably priced equivalent of OM13... it's called Liquimatic, there's a no.1, and a no.2... so I'll recheck and confirm which it is....:-D
  16. ...bit like jobs on a saracen, then....
  17. I'll photograph my heatshield for you, on Wednesday pm, expect a pretty picture very soon!....
  18. Classic Comercial (inc Military) up to 16 tons, includes private car normally used (but not both on same call-out) Roadside Assistance Recovery to Home Address/Place of Storage/Place of Repair Up to £1000 per year (any extra paid privately) £95.00
  19. homemade mounting for revolving amber light? or is it a mount for one of them 'thermal marker' things of a similar size?... looks like ferret is in Gulf War sand paint, so could be thermal thing, picture not the best...
  20. about 2 days with no breaks for tea or biscuits...... and yes, I think the seals cost about £7. A lot of labour-intensive work for a relatively simple repair, with low parts cost. It may well have been one of the reasons why the Army phased these type of vehicles out, and went for newer designs of transmission, such as in the F.V.432's etc.....:-\
  21. cxracking photos,....shame there's no sound with them!
  22. Depends how close you are....I'd willingly lend a hand, from what I can see it's not a quick or easy job...... lots of heavy lifting.....:-|
  23. So, Montie.... were the two parts fitted the wrong way round?... looks like they may have been......:nut:
  24. supply of larger what? ... underpants?, larger boots?, bigger bottles of wine?:-D
